A large-scale change to the Lunch Set lineup was made in Matsuya’s menu data on April 28 at 10:58 AM. At the same time, a discontinuation notice was added to the two Stir-fried Chicken with Butter Soy Sauce items.

Stir-fried Chicken with Butter Soy Sauce 920 yen To Be Discontinued Successively

The two Stir-fried Chicken with Butter Soy Sauce items, which made their return on March 31 after a two-year absence, now carry a discontinuation notice roughly a month later. Following the recent delisting of the Garlic Butter Pork Short Rib & Egg Bowl, the chicken-with-butter lineup appears to be heading toward a full end.

Lunch Set “Choice of Side” Cut from 10 Options to 4

The Choice of Side, which offered 10 options when the Lunch Set lineup was renewed on April 7, has now been significantly trimmed.

Sides That Remain (4 Options)

Side Standard Add-on Price Notes
Fresh Vegetable Salad +50 yen (unchanged)
Raw Egg Free Available only with the Beef Bowl Lunch Set
Soft-boiled Egg Free Not available with the Beef Bowl Lunch Set (available with the other 5)
Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables Only +140 yen (unchanged)

Sides That Were Removed (6 Options)

Side Standard Add-on Price
Pickled Vegetables Free
Mt. Fuji Kimchi Free
Coca-Cola Free
Chilled Tofu with Ginger and Green Onion +40 yen
Grated Domestic Yam Paste +70 yen
Potato Salad & Fresh Vegetables +140 yen

Fine-Grained Conditions on the Egg Sides

Raw Egg is now “available only with the Beef Bowl Lunch Set,” while Soft-boiled Egg is “not available with the Beef Bowl Lunch Set” — a mutually exclusive setup. In other words:

  • Beef Bowl Lunch Set (530 yen): Only Raw Egg can be added
  • The other 5 Lunch Sets: Soft-boiled Egg can be added; Raw Egg cannot

Under this split, a new restriction has emerged where the cheapest option, the Beef Bowl Lunch Set, cannot be paired with Soft-boiled Egg — the more popular choice.

Lunch Set Photos Updated at the Same Time

The photos for the five Choice of Side items (Umatoma Cheese, Green Onion & Egg, Oni-oroshi Grated Radish, Cheese, and Kimchi) were also swapped from the April 7 photo shoot to a new set shot on April 24. This appears to be a reshoot to match the change in side lineup.

Number of Combinations in the “60 Lunch Sets” Also Drops Sharply

The lineup was marketed under the catchphrase “Choice of 60 Lunch Sets,” but with the Choice of Side cut from 10 options to 4, the total has fallen sharply to 6 mains × 4 sides = 24 combinations. Factoring in the egg restrictions, the effective number is even lower.

At the April 7 announcement, the “60 varieties” figure was pitched as a nod to the 60th anniversary. Just three weeks later, the number of combinations has fallen to less than half.

Editor's Note

The "60 Lunch Sets" are down to 24 in just three weeks. The side-selection conditions are getting hard enough to keep track of.
