Matsuya Hikone Store (0709) is scheduled to close at 10 AM on August 31, 2026, according to store information on Matsuya’s official website. The store name listing now carries the note, “*Scheduled to close at 10 AM on August 31. Thank you for your patronage,” spelling out the exact date and time of closure. Located in Higashinunami-cho, Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, it is one of two Matsuya locations in Hikone City.

Announcement Follows a Phased Reduction in Operating Hours

Before the closure was announced, Hikone Store’s operating hours had already been scaled back in stages. On July 31, hours were shortened from 6 AM–midnight to 6 AM–10 PM, ending late-night operation. Then on August 15, hours changed again to 9 AM–10 PM, cutting early-morning operation as well. During this period, the official website’s hours listing had also repeatedly carried a note about irregular, mainly late-night suspensions of operation, but that note disappeared along with the August 15 change. Just two days after operating hours were cut back in two stages, the permanent closure date appeared on the official website on August 17.

Minami-Hikone Store Will Be the Only Matsuya Left in Hikone City

Once Hikone Store closes, Minami-Hikone Store will be the only Matsuya remaining in Hikone City. The two stores are about 1.8 km apart in a straight line, so people who have used Hikone Store will find their nearest Matsuya shifting to Minami-Hikone Store. Shiga Prefecture currently has 13 Matsuya locations, which will drop to 12 once the Hikone Store closure takes effect. Hikone Store has also operated as a standalone Matsuya, not co-located with a Matsunoya.

Matsuya locations with a posted closure date on the official website currently number only a handful nationwide, and most of them are concentrated in Tokyo. In the Kinki region, this Hikone Store closure notice stands out as a rare case.

Past Closure Notices Have Disappeared from the Store List About a Month Later

The same closure notice format — “*Scheduled to close on [month] [day]. Thank you for your patronage” — has recently appeared for two other stores as well: Kanshoji Store and Kozaiga Store. Kanshoji Store closed as announced on May 29, and Kozaiga Store on June 15; in both cases, the listing was removed from Matsuya’s official store list roughly a month later. If Hikone Store follows the same pattern, its listing may remain in store search results and on maps for a while even after the August 31 closure.
