Matsuya Launches 'Hiyajiru Only' for 390 Yen Nationwide Today at 10 AM, August 4
At 10 AM today, August 4, Matsuya added Hiyajiru, a cold soup known as a local specialty of Miyazaki Prefecture, to its side dish menu as a 390 yen standalone item. It is available at Matsuya locations nationwide, excluding some stores. It’s a summer-ready dish that lets diners spoon down the umami of the dashi broth while still cold, and the Hiyajiru Set, which can be paired with a Beef Bowl or Set Meal, launched at the same time. Hiyajiru was also added as an option to the Set Meal’s “Choice of Side.”

The Priciest Side Dish Menu Item Outside the Eel Lineup
The 390 yen price tag stands out among the current lineup of 34 side dish items. Setting aside the three eel-based items in a class of their own — Grilled Eel Plate at 760 yen, Eel & Simmered Beef & Onion Plate at 960 yen, and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate at 960 yen — Hiyajiru at 390 yen sits at the top of the side dish menu. Just below it is “Seared” Grilled Salmon at 380 yen, a gap of only 10 yen, and it’s 20 yen more than Simmered Beef & Onion at 370 yen. A 370-yen price gap opens up between it and the eel-based items, with Hiyajiru standing right at the ceiling just below that gap.
Even ranked among soup dishes alone, it’s the priciest bowl. Miso Soup at 90 yen, Miso Soup with Tofu (standalone) at 140 yen, Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables (standalone) at 240 yen, and Samgyetang-style Soup (standalone), added in late June, at 330 yen — and above all of them sits the 390 yen Hiyajiru. Matsuya’s official X account urged fans to get one last taste of the warm Samgyetang-style Soup while previewing Hiyajiru’s arrival on August 4, signaling a shift from hot to cold in the standalone summer soup lineup. The same shift is happening in the Set Meal’s “Choice of Side”: Samgyetang-style Soup, which had been the soup option there (210 yen as a Choice of Side), has been dropped, replaced by Hiyajiru (310 yen as a Choice of Side).
The Hiyajiru Set Takes Up to 70 Yen Off the Main Dish
Alongside the standalone item, the Hiyajiru Set, which pairs it with regular menu items, also launched. The discount varies by the main dish it’s paired with: 30 yen off for Beef Bowls, 50 yen off for Bowls, and 70 yen off for Set Meals. It covers 18 combinations in total — 5 Beef Bowls, 4 Bowls, and 9 Set Meals — with the 70 yen discount on Set Meals being the largest. The Hiyajiru Vegetable Set, paired with vegetables, costs 730 yen and comes to a filling 806 kcal, compared to 162 kcal for the standalone item. All of these are available at Matsuya locations nationwide, excluding some stores.
From a May Store-Limited Item to a Nationwide Side Dish
This isn’t the first time the name Hiyajiru has appeared on Matsuya’s menu. For about six days starting May 5, 2026, a Hiyajiru item of the same name was sold for a short period as a store-limited menu item at 70 stores nationwide. During that period, Matsuya’s official X account posted about eating Hiyajiru and Chicken Nanban as Miyazaki cuisine. Building on that Miyazaki heritage, this time it’s rolling out as a nationwide side dish menu item starting August 4. A cold soup fitting for summer arrives at Matsuya tables nationwide, having first passed through a store-limited trial.

Editor's Note
There's a perverse little joy in sweating through a Matsuya summer while deliberately spooning down a cold soup — I kind of get it.
