Matsuya to Launch Store-Limited "Mini Cold Udon" for 290 Yen on August 4
This article has a newer version
Matsuya will launch the store-limited menu item “Mini Cold Udon” at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4. As of July 30, a promotional visual for the item was already posted on the store-limited menu page of Matsuya’s official website. Priced at 290 yen for a single order, it can be ordered at 634 of the chain’s 1,207 stores nationwide. Cold udon is now joining the store-limited lineup at a chain built around its signature beef bowl.
Launch Overview
| Menu Item | Number of Stores | Store List |
|---|---|---|
| Mini Cold Udon (Single, 290 yen) | 634 stores | Store List |
Sales begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4. However, the announced sales hours are “3:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. the following day,” excluding the midday window (11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). The item is offered “for dine-in only (no takeout),” limited strictly to eating in-store.
Cold Udon with Ice and Grated Ginger
The promotional visual shows thick udon noodles served in a bowl with a black exterior and red interior. Chopped green onion and grated ginger top the noodles, which sit in broth with clear ice cubes floating inside. The background features a light blue base with seigaiha (blue wave) patterns and blue maple leaves, along with scattered ice illustrations for a cool summer feel. The tagline reads “A perfectly sized portion you can slurp right down!,” offering the smaller “Mini” size as a single order for 290 yen.
Udon does not appear on Matsuya’s regular menu, making it unusual for a chain built around beef bowls to introduce cold udon through its store-limited lineup. The sales window, limited to 3:00 p.m. through 11:00 a.m. the following day and excluding the midday peak, suggests it is positioned as a light bite or late-night nightcap rather than a lunch option.
634 Stores, Concentrated in Greater Tokyo and Kinki
The 634 participating stores account for 52.5% of Matsuya’s 1,207 locations nationwide, meaning the rollout covers roughly half the chain rather than going nationwide all at once. The distribution skews heavily toward urban areas in Greater Tokyo and Kinki, led by Tokyo (250 stores), Kanagawa (83), Osaka (66), and Saitama (54). These four prefectures alone account for 453 stores, or about 70% of the total.
Meanwhile, 11 prefectures — Saga, Oita, Miyazaki, Shimane, Okinawa, Kumamoto, Akita, Nagasaki, Aomori, Kochi, and Kagoshima — have no participating stores at all, despite Matsuya having locations there. Southern Kyushu, northern Tohoku, parts of Shikoku, and Okinawa remain blank spots on the map.
The breakdown of participating stores by prefecture is as follows.
- Tokyo: 250 stores
- Kanagawa: 83 stores

“Hiyajiru Set” Also Launching on August 4
Matsuya has also announced that another summer item, the “Hiyajiru Set,” will launch on the same day, August 4 — a sign the chain is stocking up on cold menu items to capture summer demand. The store-limited lineup has recently seen several rollouts on this scale, including “Mirai no Lemon Sour” (a canned lemon sour), which launched at 430 stores. At 634 stores, the Mini Cold Udon rollout is even broader than that.
Editor's Note
Matsuya, the beef bowl specialist, is serving up cold udon with ice for just 290 yen. And running from 3 p.m. straight through to the next morning, it sounds like the perfect small-portion nightcap for when hunger strikes late.
