During the 3 p.m. hour on May 1, a major shift was confirmed in Matsuya’s official store data for stores within Tokyo. Six stores simultaneously ended 24-hour operation on the same day, and in addition, Matsuya Sakuradai Store in Nerima Ward completed, as scheduled, the renovation-related temporary closure that began on April 17.

The 6 Stores That Ended 24-Hour Operation

All six had previously operated 24 hours a day, but as of today their hours have been shortened to daytime-to-evening only.

All six stores now follow the same basic pattern of daytime-to-10-p.m. operation, running 13 to 14 hours a day, with opening times of either 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. and a uniform closing time of 10:00 p.m. Shimotakaido, Kokuryo, and Musashimurayama have newly set last-order times, leaving subtle operational differences between the stores.

Three Stores from Setagaya Ward, Effects Spreading to Neighboring Areas

Three of the six stores — Komazawa, Shimotakaido, and Oyamadai — are concentrated in Setagaya Ward. In addition, Kokuryo Store in Chofu City and Nakameguro Aobadai 2-chome Store in Meguro Ward are both located in areas adjacent to Setagaya Ward, meaning five of the six stores are clustered in a contiguous area in the southwest of the metropolis. The remaining store, Musashimurayama, is in the Tama area.

Since April, the trend of ending 24-hour operation in Tokyo had started on the city-center side — Shinjuku Sumitomo Building Store on April 14; Shibuya, Ichigaya, Yotsuya, Kanda, Kanda Ogawamachi, Shin-Koenji, and Shinjuku 1-chome stores on April 17; and Kanda Nishiguchi Store on April 19. This time, the trend has expanded significantly into the southwest, centered on Setagaya Ward.

Sakuradai Store Completes Renovation Closure Begun April 17

Matsuya Sakuradai Store in Nerima Ward completed, as scheduled, at 3:00 p.m. today, May 1, the renovation-related temporary closure that had begun at 3:00 p.m. on April 17. The note reading “*Temporarily closed from 3:00 p.m. on April 17, reopening at 3:00 p.m. on May 1” has been removed from the store name, and the store data fields for the temporary closure date/time and reopening date/time have also been cleared.

During the roughly 14-day renovation period, an article published on April 22 — “Matsuya: 5 Store Changes Today — Ikuta Store Removed from Matsuya Category, 2 New Stores Added, Suehiro Kaido Store Reopens, Sakuradai Store Announced to Enter Renovation” — had already reported the start of the renovation. With this scheduled completion now confirmed, the temporary closure schedule announced on April 17 has been fully carried out.

Tokyo’s 24-Hour Stores Show an Overall Downward Trend

Counting today’s six stores, the number of Tokyo stores that have ended 24-hour operation since April 14 now exceeds 15 in total. At the same time, opposite moves have also been occurring depending on the region and location — Kanda Minamiguchi Store reverted to 24-hour operation on April 19, followed by Kitami, Takatsu, and Yako stores on April 20. The fact that five of today’s six stores are concentrated in Setagaya Ward and its neighboring areas can also be read as a sign that operational reviews are progressing on an area-by-area basis.
