Matsuya Raises 'Pork & Kimchi Set Meal' Price to 690 Yen for Only Option, Just 4 Days After Launch
This article has a newer version
Matsuya’s limited-time “Pork & Kimchi Set Meal,” launched on August 25, had its prices revised on August 29. The Only option (side dish only) rose from 650 yen to 690 yen, and the Double, with an increased amount of meat, rose from 1,340 yen to 1,380 yen — both up by 40 yen. The Regular Serving (890 yen), which comes with rice, fresh vegetables, and miso soup, remains unchanged. The revision comes just four days after launch.
The Only and Double Options Rise 40 Yen Each, Regular Serving Unchanged
Of the three sizes, the Only option and the Double were revised, while the Regular Serving — the set meal’s base size — held steady at 890 yen.
| Size | Before | After | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only (Side Dish Only) | 650 yen | 690 yen | 411 kcal |
| Regular Serving (Set Meal) | 890 yen | 890 yen (unchanged) | 815 kcal |
| Double | 1,340 yen | 1,380 yen | 1,225 kcal |
Matsuya’s set meals typically come in three sizes: the Only option, which is just the side dish without rice or fresh vegetables; the Regular Serving, a full set meal with rice, fresh vegetables, and miso soup; and the Double, which increases the amount of meat. This time, the two ends of the lineup — the Only option without rice and the meat-heavy Double — both rose together, while only the Regular Serving, the set meal’s base price, stayed put.
New Prices Match Those in the Launch Announcement
The Pork & Kimchi Set Meal’s launch was announced in advance in an official notice dated August 20. That notice listed the side-dish-only Only option at 690 yen and the Double at 1,380 yen. When the item actually went on sale on August 25, the prices listed on the menu page (650 yen for the Only option, 1,340 yen for the Double) were 40 yen lower than the figures given in the announcement, for both sizes.
With this revision, the menu page prices for the Only option and the Double now match the figures originally given in the launch announcement. The Regular Serving price of 890 yen has remained unchanged from the announcement through launch to today.
All Three Sizes Now Match the Yakiniku Boneless Short Rib and Yakiniku Beef Set Meals
After the revision, the Pork & Kimchi Set Meal is priced at 690 yen for the Only option, 890 yen for the Regular Serving, and 1,380 yen for the Double. Among current set meals, the Yakiniku Boneless Short Rib Set Meal and the Yakiniku Beef Set Meal are priced identically across all three sizes, and the Pork & Kimchi Set Meal now lines up exactly with those two items. At launch, its Only and Double prices were 40 yen cheaper than those two set meals; this 40-yen increase has closed that gap.
At 890 yen, the Regular Serving sits in the middle of the set meal lineup. Cheaper Regular Servings include the Yakiniku Pork Loin Set Meal at 790 yen, the “Seared” Grilled Salmon Set Meal at 800 yen, and the Stir-fried Pork with Ginger Soy Sauce Set Meal at 850 yen, while the next tier up is the Chicken Nanban Set Meal at 980 yen.
App-Exclusive 70 Yen Discount Coupon Available Through September 1
Even as the price has risen, Matsuya’s official app is distributing a 70-yen discount coupon for the Pork & Kimchi Set Meal through September 1. Using the coupon brings the effective price of the 890-yen Regular Serving down to 820 yen.
The Pork & Kimchi Set Meal is a limited-time menu item built around kimchi that Matsuya has revealed is manufactured in-house at its Mt. Fuji Factory. A price change just days after launch is a notable adjustment for a limited-time item.
Editor's Note
Raising the price this soon after launch takes some nerve. Still, keeping the Regular Serving price unchanged feels almost conscientious.
