The number of Matsuya stores in Akita Prefecture offering the Akita-exclusive menu item “Iburigakko Beef Bowl” (650 yen including tax) has dropped from 4 to 3. The store that was removed is Matsuya Yokote Store (2262, 87-1 Nawatezoi, Yasuda, Yokote-shi, Akita), which has disappeared from the list of stores handling the Iburigakko Beef Bowl.

The Yokote Store is operating as usual and has not closed. The only change is that it has dropped off the list of stores serving the Iburigakko Beef Bowl. However, because the Yokote Store is the only Matsuya in Yokote City, this removal means there is now nowhere in Yokote City where you can eat the “Iburigakko Beef Bowl” at a Matsuya.

Three Stores in Akita Prefecture Still Carry It

The stores that remain on the list are Matsuya Hanawa SA (Up-bound) Store (1989), Matsuya Hanawa SA (Down-bound) Store (2019), and Matsuya Akita Hiromo Store (2218). All are in Akita Prefecture, split between the two Hanawa SA stores in Kazuno City and Akita Hiromo Store in Akita City. The number of stores carrying it fell by one, from 4 to 3, and the store that dropped off, Yokote Store, was located in Yokote City in the southern part of the prefecture.

The nearest remaining store to Yokote Store, Akita Hiromo Store, is roughly 57 km away in a straight line, and the two Hanawa SA stores in Kazuno City are about 100 km away. These are rough straight-line distances, but they show the lineup now concentrated toward the north of the prefecture.

What’s in the “Iburigakko Beef Bowl”

The price is 650 yen including tax, and it comes with a miso soup made with care (no miso soup is included for takeout). The promotional image carries the copy “Akita Prefecture-Exclusive Menu” and “A taste you can only find here: a co-creation of Matsuya and Akita,” and features icons of Akita such as the Namahage statue on the Oga Peninsula, the Akita dog, and Kubota Castle (Onsumi Yagura) dusted with snow. The bowl is built from beef and onion with a hot-spring egg, topped with chopped iburigakko and scallions, pairing the crunch of the smoked pickle with the beef bowl. Iburigakko itself is a local Akita ingredient made by smoking and pickling daikon radish, which fits the regional character of an Akita-exclusive menu item.

Offered at Every Matsuya in Akita Prefecture, Until Now

The Yokote Store, along with the remaining three, made up the only four Matsuya stores that currently exist in Akita Prefecture. In other words, the Iburigakko Beef Bowl had been a limited menu item you could eat at every Matsuya in the prefecture. With Yokote Store dropping off, that “anywhere in the prefecture” setup has broken down, and it can now be eaten at only some of the stores in the prefecture.

The Iburigakko Beef Bowl went on sale on March 17, 2025. On May 4, the official X account posted that it had visited the Yokote Store, which had “just opened this February,” and tried the Iburigakko Beef Bowl, introducing it as “an ultra-rare menu item limited to 4 Matsuya stores in Akita Prefecture.” Later, on June 22, when the promotional image was swapped from the opening-commemoration version to the prefecture-limited version, the target was still the 4 stores in Akita Prefecture. This move to 3 stores is a change from that figure of 4.
