Matsuya will launch the Indian curry “Spinach and Cottage Cheese Curry and Rice” at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Matsuya stores nationwide (excluding some locations). The company calls it by the name “Palak Paneer” and describes it as a Matsuya-style take on the Indian dish of pureed spinach and cheese simmered with spices. It was announced in an official notice dated September 17.

A Flat 100 Yen Above the Classic Curry

The regular serving is 780 yen (tax included, same below) and comes with rice and miso soup. The Only version is 660 yen, the “Karegyu,” which pairs the curry with a Beef Bowl, is 1,050 yen, and the “Spinach and Cottage Cheese Chicken Curry and Rice,” a collaboration with chicken, is 960 yen.

Set against the current flagship curry, the “Founding Beef Curry and Rice,” the price gap is constant. For the Only version, the regular serving, and the Karegyu alike, the new curry is priced a flat 100 yen above the Founding Beef Curry and Rice.

Menu item Only Regular Serving Karegyu
Spinach and Cottage Cheese Curry and Rice 660 yen 780 yen 1,050 yen
Founding Beef Curry and Rice 560 yen 680 yen 950 yen

At 780 yen, the regular serving sits just below the “Cheese Founding Beef Curry and Rice” at 880 yen and the “Hamburg Steak Founding Beef Curry and Rice” at 890 yen, which stack cheese or a hamburg steak on top. For a plain curry with no added toppings, that is a relatively high price range. It can be seen as a dish positioned a step above the classic.

Takeout is also available, but in that case the miso soup costs extra. At stores with a My Curry Shokudo co-located, miso soup is not included. Shareholder benefit vouchers can be used on eligible menu items.

A First for Matsuya: Spinach and Cottage Cheese

None of the curries Matsuya has released so far has combined spinach and cottage cheese. Looking back through past new-product announcements, no similar pairing of ingredients turns up, so this marks its first appearance. The notice opens by calling it an “authentic Indian curry made with vegetables,” putting its Indian-cuisine identity front and center. Matsuya also offered the Indian-style Butter Chicken Curry and Rice this past May, so this continues a run of authentic spice curries.

That said, Matsuya has repeatedly put vegetable-focused curries on the menu. It has a track record of introducing vegetable curries season after season, including the “Vegetable-Packed Curry and Rice” and “Eggplant and Tomato Curry and Rice” in 2010, the “Summer Vegetable Tomato Curry and Rice” in 2013, and the “Colorful Stewed Vegetable Curry and Rice” in 2022.

It has also continued to give curries from around the world a Matsuya-style treatment. The Thai-cuisine “Massaman Curry and Rice” (released in 2021 and re-released in 2025) and “Poo Pad Pong Curry and Rice” (released in 2022 and revived in 2023) are examples, and this new dish fits into that lineage.

Up to 100 Yen Off Coupon in the Official App

To coincide with the launch, an up-to-100-yen-off coupon will be distributed in the official Matsuya Foods app. The distribution period runs from 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, a boost focused on the first week after launch.

The release interval of recent new products is also consistent. The previous new item, the “Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables Set,” was announced on Thursday, September 10 and released on Tuesday, September 15, while this curry was announced on Thursday, September 17 and will be released on Tuesday, September 22, the same pattern of a Thursday announcement followed by a release the next Tuesday.

Editor's Note

It looks like a dish where the green of the spinach has melted right into the curry. Breaking up the white chunks of cottage cheese as you eat seems like the way to go.
