On April 27 at 7:30 PM, Matsuya’s official X account (@matsuya_foods) posted a report that it had eaten the classic menu item Kimchi Kalbi Bowl topped with a soft-boiled egg.

A “Black Tray” Appears in an Eating Report

In the April eating-report posts (“Stir-fried Chicken with Butter Soy Sauce” on April 6, “Garlic Butter Pork Short Rib & Egg Bowl” on April 8, and “Umatoma” on April 16), the dishes were all photographed on the wooden tray used at the Mitaka Main Store.

In this Kimchi Kalbi Bowl post, however, the photo shows the black tray used at regular stores. It was likely taken at a regular store rather than the Mitaka Main Store.

The post closes by asking followers, “Why are soft-boiled eggs so popular…?🤔” Matsuya’s official account has recently made it a regular approach to encourage interaction with question-style posts, such as “Does anyone know the rank above Diamond?”

Was the Kimchi Kalbi Bowl Chosen to Show the Bowl Lineup Is Alive and Well?

The Kimchi Kalbi Bowl (Regular Serving, 690 yen) is a classic bowl item alongside the Beef Bibimbap Bowl (690 yen) and the Salt-based Green Onion Pork Boneless Short Rib Bowl (now the Salt-based Green Onion Bowl, 730 yen). April saw big changes to Matsuya’s menu: on April 21, the Original Salt-based Green Onion Thick Pork Boneless Short Rib Bowl was delisted and succeeded by the “Salt-based Green Onion Bowl,” and on April 7, four Chicken Rice items (Chicken Rice, Seared Mayo Spicy Chicken Rice, Chicken Combo Beef Bowl, and Seared Mayo Spicy Chicken Combo Beef Bowl) were delisted.

Against that backdrop, the official account’s choice of the Kimchi Kalbi Bowl this time may have been meant to show that the classic bowl lineup remains healthy even after the Chicken Rice items have disappeared.
