Matsuya's Official X Shows Twice-cooked Pork Topped with the Choice-of-Side Soft-boiled Egg
On July 20, Matsuya’s official X account (@matsuya_foods) posted a photo of Twice-cooked Pork topped with a runny soft-boiled egg, captioned “Twice-cooked Pork × Soft-boiled Egg (╹◡╹).” The Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal is a limited-time item that launched nationwide on July 14, and this post isn’t a new-release announcement — it’s a fresh look at how to enjoy the choice-of-side option.
A Shot of the Melting Yolk Mingling with the Twice-cooked Pork
The photo captures the moment the soft-boiled egg is placed on top of the Twice-cooked Pork and its cracked yolk comes flowing out. The pork, coated in a sweet-and-spicy Chinese-style sauce, is stir-fried together with cabbage, green pepper, and onion, with the orange yolk spreading across the whole dish. The Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal lets diners choose either “Kimchi” or “Soft-boiled Egg” as their side, and this post puts that soft-boiled egg in the spotlight.
On the night of the release itself, July 14, the official X account had already posted about trying the Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal, writing, “You can choose either kimchi or a soft-boiled egg as your side! I went with the soft-boiled egg,” so this post is an extension of that same thread. On the subject of soft-boiled eggs, there was also an April post that topped the regular Kimchi Kalbi Bowl with a soft-boiled egg and touched on its popularity.
“Kimchi” or “Soft-boiled Egg” — the Choice-of-Side Option Has Been a Staple Since Its Debut
The Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal is a limited-time item priced at 680 yen for the Only option, 880 yen for the Set Meal, and 1,370 yen for the Double Set Meal. The format of choosing a side of either “Kimchi” or “Soft-boiled Egg” has been described in the announcement text since the item’s original release in 2018, and the same two options carry over into 2026. Diners can pick the sharp, spicy kimchi to keep the chopsticks moving, or the mellow soft-boiled egg to add richness — a way to shift the flavor direction while keeping the same Twice-cooked Pork.
A Summer Staple for Nine Years Running, Renewed into an Authentic Chinese-style Sauce in 2026
From its original release in 2018 through 2026, Twice-cooked Pork has become a Matsuya menu item that returns every summer for nine years running. The price of the Set Meal has risen in stages: 650 yen in 2018 and 2019, 750 yen in 2022, 790 yen in 2023, and 880 yen in 2024, before dropping 20 yen to 860 yen in 2025 and then returning to the 2024 level of 880 yen in 2026 (the announcement text for 2020 and 2021 did not state a price).
For the 2026 Twice-cooked Pork, Matsuya announced it had been “powered up into an authentic Chinese-style sauce pursuing sweetness, richness, and just the right amount of spice,” positioning this year as one where the seasoning itself was renewed. Where the sauce had previously been described as a “spicy authentic Chinese-style sauce” or a “richer, spicier authentic Chinese-style sauce,” this year’s nuance shifted toward emphasizing the balance of sweetness, richness, and spice. Even now, well after the release date, the official X account continues to promote the limited-time Twice-cooked Pork by showing it paired with the soft-boiled egg.
Editor's Note
Eat the soft-boiled egg side as is, or pile it onto the Twice-cooked Pork? Seeing that melting yolk makes the soft-boiled egg more tempting than the kimchi next time.
