On Matsuya’s official menu page, four side items now carry the note “※To be discontinued successively”: the Grilled Eel Plate (760 yen), Eel and Beef Plate (960 yen) and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate (960 yen) from the classic summer eel campaign, along with Yatara Only (200 yen), which recreates a Shinshu regional dish. All four were introduced repeatedly through announcement articles and the official X account when they launched, but no such announcement appears to have accompanied this discontinuation notice, which so far exists only as a note on the menu page.

Notice Applies Only to Standalone Plates; Bowls, Beef Bowls and Set Meals Continue

The Grilled Eel Plate, Eel and Beef Plate and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate are the three side items of the summer eel campaign, which Matsuya describes as being in its eighth year of popularity. They launched on June 23 alongside the Grilled Eel Bowl, Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl and Eel Combo Beef Bowl. Yatara Only debuted on July 7 together with the Yatara Beef Bowl and Yatara Japanese-style Hamburg Steak Set Meal, as part of the rollout of “yatara,” a Shinshu regional dish that Matsuya billed as making its first appearance at the chain.

The “※To be discontinued successively” note has been added only to these four standalone side plates. The items served with rice — the bowls, beef bowls and set meals — carry no such note, and the main items of the same campaign all remain on sale.

The lineup is being wound down from the plates and condiment-style items that come without rice, while the rice-based mains stay.

How Long Will They Stay in Stores?

The “※To be discontinued successively” note is attached to the menu page without any stated end date. Even so, items on Matsuya’s official site that have received this note have so far typically disappeared from the list within about one to two weeks of the note appearing (in some cases within a few days). Given that the note appeared as of August 4, the items are expected to be phased out successively by mid-August at the latest.

The eel campaign ends about nine days after this year’s Day of the Ox (July 26), and Yatara Only receives its discontinuation notice less than a month after launch. For anyone hoping to have them one last time, the window left is not long.

Prices and Nutrition of the Three Eel Plates

The eel side plates are priced more approachably than their rice-based bowl counterparts. Compared with the Grilled Eel Bowl (980 yen), the Grilled Eel Plate costs 760 yen, and compared with the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl (1,180 yen), the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate costs 960 yen — in both cases 220 yen less without the rice.

The Grilled Eel Plate, at 760 yen, is the entry point to the eel side items. Its nutrition comes to 277 kcal, 19.3 g protein, 16.8 g fat, 11.7 g carbohydrates and 2.6 g salt equivalent.

The Eel and Beef Plate, at 960 yen, puts eel and the beef bowl topping on a single plate. It has 511 kcal, 27.0 g protein, 37.9 g fat, 15.2 g carbohydrates and 3.5 g salt equivalent, making it the highest-calorie of the three eel plates. Together with the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate, it is tied for the most expensive side item on the current menu.

The Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate is also 960 yen, pairing the eel with soft, fluffy egg. It has 501 kcal, 37.0 g protein, 31.6 g fat, 14.0 g carbohydrates and 4.1 g salt equivalent, with the most protein of the four items.

Yatara Only: 200 Yen, a Condiment Also Used for “Extra Yatara”

Yatara Only is 200 yen, placing it in the 200-yen tier of side items alongside Green Onion and Soft-boiled Egg, Extra Cheese, Simmered Beef & Onion cooked with Sweet Soy sauce, served in Small Dish, and Rice. At 16 kcal, 0.5 g protein, 0.3 g fat, 2.9 g carbohydrates and 1.1 g salt equivalent, it is a light item made mainly of vegetables and seasonings. The official X account also introduced it as a way to enjoy “Extra Yatara” — layering it on top of the Yatara Beef Bowl to change up the flavor.
