Matsuya Discontinues 4 Eel and Yatara Side Dishes, Including Grilled Eel Plate

Only the Standalone Plates Get the Discontinuation Notice — Bowls, Beef Bowl, and Set Meal Continue

On Matsuya’s official website menu page, four items have been marked “*To Be Discontinued Successively”: the side dishes from the summer’s regular eel campaign — Grilled Eel Plate (760 yen), Eel & Simmered Beef & Onion Plate (960 yen), and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate (960 yen) — plus Yatara Only (200 yen), a recreation of a Shinshu regional dish. These items were repeatedly featured in announcement articles and on the official X account at launch, but no such announcement accompanies this discontinuation notice — it appears only as a label on the menu page.

Grilled Eel Plate, Eel & Simmered Beef & Onion Plate, and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate are the three side dishes in Matsuya’s summer eel campaign, which the company touts as being “beloved for an eighth year running.” They launched on June 23, 2026, alongside Grilled Eel Bowl, Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl, and Eel Combo Beef Bowl. Yatara Only arrived on July 7, 2026, as part of the rollout of Yatara, a Shinshu regional dish that Matsuya introduced as “making its Matsuya debut,” alongside Yatara Beef Bowl and Yatara Japanese-style Hamburg Steak Set Meal.

This time, the “*To Be Discontinued Successively” label applies only to these four standalone side-plate items. The rice-based bowl, Beef Bowl, and Set Meal versions carry no such label, and every main item from the same campaign remains on sale.

Item Price Category Discontinuation Notice
Grilled Eel Bowl 980 yen Bowl None
Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl 1,180 yen Bowl None
Eel Combo Beef Bowl 1,180 yen Beef Bowl None
Yatara Beef Bowl 650 yen Beef Bowl None

Eel & Simmered Beef & Onion Plate 960 yen Side *To Be Discontinued Successively
Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate 960 yen Side *To Be Discontinued Successively
Yatara Only 200 yen Side *To Be Discontinued Successively

The rice-based main items are staying, while the rice-free plates and the standalone condiment item are the first to be phased out.

How Long Will They Stay on the Menu?

The “*To Be Discontinued Successively” notice is simply attached to the menu page listing, without a specific end date. That said, items on Matsuya’s official website that have carried this label have historically disappeared from the lineup roughly one to two weeks later (in some cases within just a few days). Given that the label appeared as of August 4, 2026, the items are expected to be phased out successively by mid-August 2026 at the latest.

The eel campaign’s notice comes about nine days after this year’s Day of the Ox (July 26, 2026), while Yatara Only is being flagged for discontinuation less than a month after its launch. If you’re aiming for one last taste, there isn’t much time left.

Prices and Nutrition for the Three Eel Plates

The eel side plates are priced more accessibly than their rice-bowl counterparts. Grilled Eel Plate comes in at 760 yen versus 980 yen for Grilled Eel Bowl, and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate is 960 yen versus 1,180 yen for Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl — in both cases 220 yen cheaper without the rice.

Grilled Eel Plate, at 760 yen, serves as the entry point into the eel side lineup. Its nutritional profile is 277 kcal, 19.3g protein, 16.8g fat, 11.7g carbohydrates, and 2.6g salt equivalent.

Eel & Simmered Beef & Onion Plate, priced at 960 yen, combines eel with Beef Bowl topping on a single plate. At 511 kcal, 27.0g protein, 37.9g fat, 15.2g carbohydrates, and 3.5g salt equivalent, it’s the highest-calorie of the three eel plates. Along with Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate, it ties for the highest price on the current side menu.

Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate is also 960 yen, pairing the eel with soft, fluffy egg. At 501 kcal, 37.0g protein, 31.6g fat, 14.0g carbohydrates, and 4.1g salt equivalent, it has the highest protein content of the four items.

Yatara Only, 200 Yen: A Condiment Also Used for “Extra Yatara”

Yatara Only is priced at 200 yen, placing it in the same price band as other 200-yen-range side items like Green Onion & Egg, Extra Cheese, Small Serving Simmered Beef & Onion, and Rice. At 16 kcal, 0.5g protein, 0.3g fat, 2.9g carbohydrates, and 1.1g salt equivalent, it’s a light item centered on vegetables and condiments. The official X account has also introduced it as “Extra Yatara,” a way of piling it onto Yatara Beef Bowl for a flavor change partway through the meal.

Editor's Note

The bowls are sticking around, but the plates get to say goodbye first. Both the eel and the yatara are hard to part with, so grab one last taste soon.
