Matsuya Adds Discontinuation Notice to 2 Store-Limited Items Including the Revived 'Grilled Eel Bowl'
This article has a newer version
On September 22, Matsuya added a “※To be discontinued successively” note to the remarks field for the store-limited Grilled Eel Bowl and Eel Combo Beef Bowl in its bowl menu. Both items returned on August 25 as store-limited menu items at 736 stores nationwide, so the notice comes about four weeks after sales resumed. The same note also appears on the store-limited Grilled Eel Plate and Eel and Beef Plate, which means the eel lineup has once again entered the phase leading up to discontinuation.
Back Two Weeks After the Nationwide Run Ended, and Now Another Notice
The Grilled Eel Bowl (980 yen) and Eel Combo Beef Bowl are about to finish their second sales cycle of 2026. The timeline so far is as follows.
- June 23: Launched as nationwide limited-time menu items, alongside the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl and others
- August 5: The remarks field gained the note “※To be discontinued successively”
- August 11: Removed from the nationwide menu (49 days after launch)
- August 25: Revived as store-limited menu items at 736 stores nationwide
- September 22: The store-limited versions also gained the note “※To be discontinued successively” in their remarks field
It took only two weeks from the end of the nationwide run to the store-limited revival. Of the six nationwide items in June (Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl, Grilled Eel Bowl, Eel Combo Beef Bowl, Grilled Eel Plate, Eel and Beef Plate, and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate), the two items carrying the “Fluffy Egg” name were dropped, leaving four: the Grilled Eel Bowl, Eel Combo Beef Bowl, Grilled Eel Plate, and Eel and Beef Plate. All four have now received the discontinuation notice together.
The store-limited revival was not listed in the news section of the official website and was announced only on Matsuya’s official X account. The official post read: “Starting at 10:00 on Tuesday, August 25, the ‘Grilled Eel Bowl’ is back for a limited number of stores 🎉”
Grilled Eel Bowl and Eel Combo Beef Bowl: Prices and Nutrition
The prices and nutrition of the store-limited versions are identical to those of the June nationwide versions, and the product codes have not changed. The Grilled Eel Bowl costs 980 yen in the Regular Serving and the Eel Combo Beef Bowl costs 1,180 yen in the Regular Serving. Both come in Regular Serving, Double, and Triple sizes.
Among the bowl menu, the Grilled Eel Bowl (980 yen) is the third most expensive of the seven current bowls. It is 290 to 350 yen above the Yakiniku Beef Bowl and Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl (630 yen each) and the Boneless Short Rib and Kimchi Bowl and Beef Bibimbap Bowl (690 yen each). The only item in the same price range is the Beef Short Rib & Offal Bowl (990 yen), just 10 yen higher. The Eel Combo Beef Bowl (1,180 yen) is the most expensive of the seven bowls, 200 yen above the Grilled Eel Bowl and 190 yen above the second most expensive, the Beef Short Rib & Offal Bowl.
Prices by size are as follows. At both the Double and Triple sizes, the Eel Combo Beef Bowl consistently costs 200 yen more than the Grilled Eel Bowl.
| Size | Grilled Eel Bowl | Eel Combo Beef Bowl |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Serving | 980 yen | 1,180 yen |
| Double | 1,680 yen | 1,880 yen |
| Triple | 2,380 yen | 2,580 yen |
Nutrition facts (Regular Serving) are as follows. The Eel Combo Beef Bowl combines eel with a beef bowl, and at Regular Serving it has 234 kcal more than the Grilled Eel Bowl.

| Energy | 674 kcal | 908 kcal |
| Protein | 26.6 g | 34.3 g |

In the Past, Sales Ended 6 to 7 Days After the Notice
The official website does not state an end date. The best guide to the remaining time is what happened with the nationwide versions launched in June. The note “※To be discontinued successively” appeared on August 5, and six days later, on August 11, the items vanished from the menu. The eel side items from the same period (such as the Grilled Eel Plate) also took 6 to 7 days, from the August 4 notice to the August 11 end.
This time, however, the items are not on sale nationwide but only at 736 stores as store-limited items, so they are expected to disappear store by store “successively,” as the note says. They may not all vanish at once after the same number of days as the nationwide versions. The notice for the store-limited versions appeared about four weeks after launch, earlier than for the nationwide versions, which received theirs about six weeks after launch.
Editor's Note
Barely had we finished celebrating the comeback, and it seems the eel is set to vanish again this year in no time.
