Matsuya Ends Sales of 8 Summer Limited-Time Items Today, Including Grilled Eel Bowl
On August 11, 2026, 8 summer limited-time items — including the Grilled Eel Bowl, Yatara Beef Bowl, and Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal — were delisted all at once from Matsuya’s official website menu. As of August 5, all of them had carried a “To Be Discontinued Successively” label, and the delisting played out exactly as forecast. That same August 11, at 10 a.m., two new items — the Beef Short Rib & Offal Bowl and Matsuya’s Yakiniku Beef Bowl — went on sale, and the three lines of limited-time menu items rolled out in succession since late June disappeared from the menu as the new items took their place.
Prices and Sales Periods of the 8 Delisted Items
The 8 items that left the lineup were: 3 eel-based bowls plus the Samgyetang-style Soup, 2 items bearing the name of “yatara,” a Shinshu local dish, and 2 versions of the Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal made with an authentic Chinese-style sauce. The category, price, and sales period for each are as follows.
| Item | Category | Price | Sales Period | Days Listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled Eel Bowl | Bowl | 980 yen | June 23 – August 11 | 49 days |
| Eel Combo Beef Bowl | Bowl | 1,180 yen | June 23 – August 11 | 49 days |
| Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl | Bowl | 1,180 yen | June 23 – August 11 | 49 days |
| Samgyetang-style Soup Only | Side Dish | 330 yen | June 23 – August 11 | 49 days |
| Yatara Beef Bowl | Beef Bowl | 650 yen | July 7 – August 11 | 35 days |
| Yatara Japanese-style Hamburg Steak Set Meal | Set Meal | 1,180 yen | July 7 – August 11 | 35 days |
| Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal with Kimchi | Set Meal | 880 yen | July 14 – August 11 | 28 days |
| Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal with Soft-boiled Egg | Set Meal | 880 yen | July 14 – August 11 | 28 days |
All three lines followed the same pattern: each was announced via an official notice 5 days before release, with sales starting at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday (June 23, July 7, and July 14 were all Tuesdays). The two new items that took their place this time also went on sale at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11 — the same pattern repeating once again.
The 3 Eel Bowls: 49 Days Spanning the Day of the Ox
The items that stayed on the lineup the longest were the 3 eel bowls that debuted on June 23. The standalone Grilled Eel Bowl was 980 yen, while the Eel Combo Beef Bowl (eel paired with a beef bowl) and the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl (topped with egg) were each 1,180 yen, placing these two among the higher price brackets within the bowl category. According to the official notice, the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl is a summer staple series now in its “8th year of being loved” and its “8th time on sale,” and this year it went on sale June 23 following an announcement on June 18.
On July 26, the Day of the Ox, these eel items took center stage in the lineup. The side-dish versions from the same eel campaign — Grilled Eel Plate, Eel & Simmered Beef & Onion Plate, and Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate — were also delisted together on August 11, so all the eel-related bowls and plates disappeared from the menu on the same day.
Shinshu’s Local Dish “Yatara”: An End After 35 Days on the Menu
The Yatara Beef Bowl (650 yen) and Yatara Japanese-style Hamburg Steak Set Meal (1,180 yen), added on July 7, were menu items named after “yatara,” a local dish from Shinshu’s Ina Valley that the official notice introduced as “making its debut at Matsuya.” The dish translates the local way of eating — mixing in chopped summer vegetables and more — into a Matsuya item, making it a genuine newcomer to the lineup. Even so, its 35-day sales period was the middle length among the three lines.
At 650 yen, the Yatara Beef Bowl sat above the middle of the beef bowl lineup — pricier than the Kimchi Beef Bowl and the Oni-oroshi Grated Radish Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce Beef Bowl (560 yen each), though just short of the Cheese Beef Bowl (660 yen). The Yatara Japanese-style Hamburg Steak Set Meal fell in the 1,180 yen bracket alongside items like the Umatoma Hamburg Steak Set Meal. The side-dish Yatara Only was also delisted on the same August 11.
The Annual Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal, 2 Versions: 28 Days
The last of the 8 items to appear, debuting July 14, were the Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal with Kimchi and the Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal with Soft-boiled Egg (880 yen each). Described in the official notice as making its annual “limited-time comeback again this year,” this recurring menu item touted a renewed, authentic Chinese-style sauce. Diners could choose between kimchi or soft-boiled egg as the side dish, and at 28 days, its listing period was the shortest of the three lines.
At 880 yen, the price sat almost in the middle of the set meal category — 30 yen more than the Stir-fried Pork with Ginger Soy Sauce Set Meal (850 yen) and 10 yen less than the Yakiniku Beef Set Meal and Yakiniku Boneless Short Rib Set Meal (890 yen each). The two versions were priced identically.
Samgyetang-style Soup Only Also Disappears, Side Dish Baton Passes to Hiyajiru
The Samgyetang-style Soup Only (330 yen), which debuted the same day as the 3 eel items on June 23, was also delisted on August 11. Within the side dish lineup overall, it sat in a higher price bracket — pricier than the Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables Only (240 yen) and approaching the Simmered Beef & Onion (370 yen) and Hiyajiru Only (390 yen). Separately, the Samgyetang-style Soup offered as a choosable side for lunch sets had already disappeared earlier, on August 4. In that same side-dish slot, a standalone Hiyajiru went on sale on August 4, and Matsuya’s official X account had posted in late July that the baton would pass from Samgyetang-style Soup to Hiyajiru.
Editor's Note
From the Day of the Ox to Shinshu's yatara to authentic Chinese-style twice-cooked pork, this was a lineup you could savor slowly all summer long. Next up: new teppan-grilled faces take the baton.
