At 10 AM on August 25, Matsuya will start selling four eel-based items — the Grilled Eel Bowl, Eel Combo Beef Bowl, Grilled Eel Plate and Eel and Beef Plate — as store-limited menu items at 736 stores nationwide. These four items had been sold on the nationwide menu from June 23, spanned the Day of the Ox on July 26, and then ended on August 11. After a gap of about two weeks, they return to store counters, this time at a narrower set of stores.

The return had been announced in advance. On August 20, Matsuya’s official website announced the August 25 launch on its store-limited page, and on the morning of the 25th the official X account also said the items would return today at 10 AM as store-limited items. The four items have now actually appeared on the menu page as well.

Prices and Nutrition for the 4 Items

Prices and energy/nutrition values for the four items are as follows (figures are for the standard size for both bowls and plates; the Grilled Eel Bowl and Eel Combo Beef Bowl come with miso soup).

All prices are exactly the same as when the items were sold nationwide from June 23.

Of these, the Grilled Eel Plate (760 yen) sits in a price range far above the rest of Matsuya’s side dishes. The standard Beef Plate is 370 yen, and the next most expensive single item doesn’t even reach 400 yen. Only the Grilled Eel Plate and the Eel and Beef Plate (960 yen) land in the 700-yen and 900-yen ranges, and no side dishes fall in the price range between them.

Three Sizes: Regular, Double and Triple

The two bowl items come in sizes with increasing amounts of eel. Prices are as follows.

For both items, the price rises by a flat 700 yen at each step, from Regular to Double and from Double to Triple. At the Triple size, the Grilled Eel Bowl costs 2,380 yen and the Eel Combo Beef Bowl 2,580 yen, and the latter ranks among the most expensive bowls among the store-limited items.

Set Prices Cheaper Than Ordering Items Separately

The Eel Combo Beef Bowl and the Eel and Beef Plate each combine eel with beef, and are priced lower than ordering the individual items separately.

• Eel Combo Beef Bowl (1,180 yen): ordering the Grilled Eel Bowl at 980 yen and the Beef Bowl at 460 yen separately comes to 1,440 yen, so it is 260 yen cheaper
• Eel and Beef Plate (960 yen): ordering the Grilled Eel Plate at 760 yen and the Beef Plate at 370 yen separately comes to 1,130 yen, so it is 170 yen cheaper

For anyone who wants eel and beef on one dish, choosing the combination items works out cheaper than ordering two single items.

Available at 736 Stores Nationwide, With 289 Concentrated in Tokyo

For the Grilled Eel Bowl, this store-limited rollout covers 736 stores across 36 prefectures nationwide. Tokyo accounts for 289 stores, roughly 40% of the total, and the distribution skews heavily toward the big metropolitan areas of Kanto and Kinki, followed by Kanagawa, Osaka, Saitama and Chiba.

The Two “Fluffy Egg” Items From the June Nationwide Lineup Are Not Included

When the items went on nationwide sale from June 23, two more items were sold alongside today’s four: the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Bowl and the Fluffy Egg Grilled Eel Plate, topped with soft, fluffy egg. This store-limited return does not include those two egg-topped items, so the lineup consists of four items: the Grilled Eel Bowl, Eel Combo Beef Bowl, Grilled Eel Plate and Eel and Beef Plate. All four are priced the same as in the June version; only the egg-topped variations have disappeared.
