At 8:10 p.m. on August 18, Matsuya’s official X account posted “Which Matsuya Is This? (╹◡╹)” along with a video showing menu footage playing on a store’s large screen. This is the first time the ongoing store-guessing quiz series, which has run since May, has asked the question using a video instead of a photo.

The Video Shows a Large Screen and “Hiyajiru Chicken Nanban”

The roughly 16-second video slowly pans across a large screen mounted above a Matsuya sign. Footage of the limited-time Hiyajiru Chicken Nanban Set plays on the screen, showing a close-up of a plate of Chicken Nanban coated in tartar sauce alongside a bowl of hiyajiru topped with scallions. The screen then displays the menu names “Chicken Nanban Set Meal,” “Hiyajiru Chicken Nanban Set,” and “Chicken Nanban Only,” followed by the tagline “Rich, yet refreshing.”

The Hiyajiru Chicken Nanban Set is a limited-time menu item announced in an official notice dated August 13 titled “Enjoy Summer with a Miyazaki Specialty: ‘Hiyajiru Chicken Nanban Set’ Now on Sale.” The dish combines Chicken Nanban with hiyajiru, a local specialty of Miyazaki, for a summer-friendly meal. The large screen shown in the video appears to be playing that menu footage in-store.

Clues to the Location

The point of the quiz is to get followers to guess which store this is, and the video contains several features that could help narrow it down.

  • A large screen playing menu footage is mounted above the Matsuya sign
  • The store’s exterior walls and pillars are painted a pale teal (blue-green) color
  • A red lantern hangs on the left side of the frame
  • A security camera is visible to the right of the sign

An orange-and-blue Matsuya logo sign is visible below the screen, but nothing showing the store’s name appears in the frame. As with previous installments, the official account did not reveal the answer at the time of posting, and the location remains undisclosed.

Sixth Installment Since May, With Only One Answer Revealed So Far

This marks the sixth installment of the “Which Matsuya Is This?” store-guessing series, counting from its debut on May 11. The May 11, May 15, July 18, August 5, and August 9 installments were all posed with photos, making this the first time a video has been used. While the gaps between posts were initially longer, the series has recently picked up pace, with installments on August 5, August 9, and August 18 following in quick succession.

Of the previous five installments, the official account revealed the answer only for the August 5 quiz, announcing in a post the following morning, August 6, that the correct answer was the Shin-Matsudo Store. The answer to the fifth installment, posted on August 9 immediately before this one, has not been revealed as of this writing.

This installment’s caption, “Which Matsuya Is This? (╹◡╹),” is identical word-for-word, down to the emoticon, to the caption used for the August 5 quiz. This emoticon has been attached repeatedly throughout the store-guessing series, making it a recurring fixture.

Editor's Note

Bringing out video really shows they're stepping up their game. Did the red lantern and teal-colored wall ring a bell for anyone?
