Matsuya's Store-Limited 'Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal' and 3 Other Items Delisted One Week After Launch

MenuStore-limitedDiscontinuedGorochiki

Four store-limited Matsuya menu items that launched together on September 15 disappeared from the store-limited menu list on September 22. The delisted items are the two versions of the Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal (Fond de Veau and Tomato), the Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal, and the Pork Chap Set Meal. All four were delisted roughly one week after sales began at 10:00 a.m. on September 15.

Zero Overlap Among the Four Items, Sold Across a Network of 210 Stores

The four items were sold through mutually exclusive networks with zero overlap in participating stores. The Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal was carried at 35 stores for the Fond de Veau version and 35 stores for the Tomato version, the Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal at 70 stores, and the Pork Chap Set Meal at 70 stores — 210 stores in total, with no store carrying more than one of the four items. Even if you visited the same store, it would only ever be offering one of the four.

Combined, the four items spanned 36 prefectures, and Tokyo had the most stores for every single item. By item, Tokyo’s store counts were 12 for Fond de Veau, 8 for Tomato, 18 for the Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal, and 15 for the Pork Chap Set Meal. The Pork Chap Set Meal’s next-largest count was 9 stores in Chiba Prefecture, while the Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal’s was 8 stores in Kanagawa Prefecture. The share of Matsunoya co-located stores also varied: half of the Pork Chap Set Meal’s 70 stores — 35 — were Matsunoya co-located stores, while only 7 of the Fond de Veau version’s 35 stores were.

Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal: Fond de Veau and Tomato Sold at Separate Sets of 35 Stores

The Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal (1,180 yen each) came in two sauce variations of the same dish, sold separately at two distinct sets of 35 stores. The Fond de Veau and Tomato versions shared no stores in common, so which sauce you encountered depended entirely on which store you visited.

Both promotional posters shared a common design featuring the French tricolor flag, Napoleon on horseback, a compass, and the Eiffel Tower, along with the copy “The Taste of France That Even Napoleon Loved.” Marengo-style is known as a chicken dish associated with Napoleon. The visual difference between the two versions came down to sauce color: the Fond de Veau version was coated in a deep brown reduced sauce, while the Tomato version was topped with a vivid red tomato sauce. Both shared the same composition — chunky pieces of chicken and shrimp topped with a soft-yolked sunny-side-up egg at the center, served in an iron-pot-style dish.

Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal

The Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal was sold at 70 stores. This single store-limited slot contained two types — Hamburg Steak and Chicken — priced at 830 yen and up for the Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak Set Meal and 980 yen for the Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal. The poster’s copy read “Teriyaki Egg — A Feast of Layered Deliciousness” and “The Perfect Balance of Runny Egg and Sweet-and-Savory Teriyaki,” with a visual showing a MATSUYA-logo dish layered with sweet-and-savory sauce-glazed hamburg steak, lettuce, mayonnaise, and a soft-yolked sunny-side-up egg with a melting yolk.

Pork Chap Set Meal

The Pork Chap Set Meal (950 yen) was also sold at 70 stores. The poster’s copy read “A Luxurious Harmony of Tartness and Sweetness” and “Tomato, Onion, Garlic — All the Flavor, Packed In,” with a visual of a ladle drizzling a red onion-flecked sauce over pork served on a white plate. The side dishes included shredded cabbage, corn, cucumber, and carrot.

An Entire Launch Batch Turns Over Together

All four items launched simultaneously at 10:00 a.m. on September 15, and all four were delisted together on September 22. Matsuya’s store-limited menu has continued a rotation in which an entire batch launched at the same time turns over together after about a week, and this sales period followed that same pace. In the past, some batches saw a single item from a simultaneous launch stay listed a few days longer or remain listed continuously, but this time all four items came off the list together on the same day without exception.

The Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal, the Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken Set Meal, and the Pork Chap Set Meal all have no prior record of appearing under the same names on the store-limited menu. Store-limited items sometimes become regular menu items or reappear after a gap, so the possibility remains that these will return in some form.

Editor's Note

This was one of those cases where whether your nearest store had the Fond de Veau or the Tomato version made a taste-comparison a lot harder to pull off.
