Matsuya Rolls Out Store-Limited "Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal" in Two Sauces — Fond de Veau and Tomato — at 35 Stores Each
Matsuya’s store-limited menu page has added a new French-style set meal, the “Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal.” Both versions are priced at 1,180 yen, and the announcement image reads “On sale from 10:00 on Tuesday, September 15.” There are two sauce variations, Fond de Veau and Tomato, each carried at 35 stores for a combined 70 stores. Those 70 stores account for roughly 5.8% of Matsuya’s 1,214 existing stores.
The Same Set Meal, Split Between Two Non-Overlapping Store Groups
The biggest twist here is that, despite being the same “Chunky Chicken Marengo-style Set Meal,” none of the 35 stores carrying Fond de Veau overlap with the 35 stores carrying Tomato. No store carries both, so readers will only be able to choose one version or the other at their nearest location.
| Sauce | Sauce Characteristics | Price | Number of Stores | Prefectures Covered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fond de Veau | A deep brown sauce made from veal stock | 1,180 yen | 35 stores | 14 prefectures |
| Tomato | A vivid red tomato sauce | 1,180 yen | 35 stores | 18 prefectures |
The two versions also differ in geographic character. Fond de Veau is concentrated in the Greater Tokyo area, led by 12 stores in Tokyo along with Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and Osaka, and stays within 14 prefectures. Tomato, centered on 8 stores in Tokyo, spreads more widely nationwide, reaching 18 prefectures from Hokkaido to Oita, Ehime, and Yamaguchi.
This technique of releasing the same dish simultaneously across two non-overlapping store groups was also seen with the store-limited “Beef Steak Bowl” in late June. Back then, “Beef Steak Bowl A” and “Beef Steak Bowl B” were each rolled out to 32 stores with zero stores in common. This isn’t to say the flavor or campaign intent is identical — rather, the structure of splitting stores into two groups is what repeats.
Also launching at the same 10:00 on September 15, the store-limited lineup includes not only these two Marengo-style set meals but also “Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak & Teriyaki Egg Chicken” and the “Pork Chap Set Meal” (each at 70 stores), making this a moment when a cluster of store-limited new items is moving at once.
“Marengo-style” Is a French Dish Tied to Napoleon
Chicken Marengo is a French dish in which chicken is simmered in tomato and served with a fried egg and shrimp, and it’s known for an anecdote tied to Napoleon. The announcement image plays up that origin too, laying a soldier on horseback, the Eiffel Tower, and a compass over the French tricolor, alongside the tagline “The Taste of France That Napoleon Also Loved.”
Matsuya’s version pairs large, chunky pieces of chicken with shrimp, topped with a soft fried egg at the center, served in a stone-pot-style dish, and offered as a set meal with rice and miso soup. The name “Chunky Chicken” was also used for the “Neo Tomato Chunky Chicken Curry and Rice,” which launched in June and was delisted on July 14, but that was a curry dish and is a separate product from this French-style set meal.
Fond de Veau: 35 Stores (14 Prefectures)
This version is simmered in a deep brown sauce built on veal stock. It shares the same announcement image design as the Tomato version, so the two can be told apart by the sauce color in the food photo.

Store-limited chicken items can sometimes be short-lived. The “Marry Me Chicken Set Meal,” added at up to 100 stores in April, was delisted just 8 days after going live. Anyone hoping to try the Marengo-style set meal should keep an eye on how long it stays listed.
Editor's Note
Worth checking in advance whether your nearest store falls into the Fond de Veau camp or the Tomato camp.
