Matsuya's Official X Says Kimchi Kalbi Bowl and Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl Could Go Nationwide in October "If Well-Received"
On the night of August 29, Matsuya’s official X account (@matsuya_foods) looked back on that day’s “Meat Day” Bakumori-size promotion for the Kimchi Kalbi Bowl and Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl by quoting its own earlier post, writing, “If these two items get a good response on Meat Day, we’ll promote them nationwide around October, so please cheer us on (´∀`).” The post signals an intention to expand the two items into a nationwide-scale promotion as early as October, depending on the response to the one-day-only Bakumori size.
The Quoted Post: The Bakumori-Size Announcement for “Yakiniku Day”
The post quoted this time is the advance notice published on the night of August 28. The original read: “Tomorrow is the 29th, which means it’s Meat Day. 🍖 And since it’s August 29th, it’s also Yakiniku Day! This time, as a special menu item… we’re selling Bakumori-size versions of the Kimchi Kalbi Bowl and Salt Green Onion Bowl!! The rice is Extra-large Serving, and the meat is double the Large Serving. Challengers wanted! We’ll be waiting for you at the store (╹◡╹).” The post abbreviates the second item as “Salt Green Onion Bowl,” but its official name is “Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl.”
The Bakumori size went on sale on August 29 itself, and the official X account posted footage that same evening of its own staff attempting to finish the servings. Today’s post serves as the wrap-up to that sequence of events, touching on what comes next for the promotion itself.
The Two Items Are Regular Nationwide Menu Staples; Bakumori Was a One-Day-Only Size
The Kimchi Kalbi Bowl and Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl targeted for the “nationwide promotion” are both standard bowl menu items regularly sold at Matsuya locations nationwide. The Kimchi Kalbi Bowl is priced at 690 yen for a Regular Serving (660 yen Small Serving, 910 yen Large Serving, 1,090 yen Extra-large Serving), while the Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl is priced at 630 yen for a Regular Serving (600 yen Small Serving, 850 yen Large Serving).
The “Bakumori size” that appeared on August 29 was a serving not found in the regular lineup, consisting of Extra-large Serving rice and double the Large Serving amount of meat. It was priced at 1,200 yen for the Kimchi Kalbi Bowl and 1,140 yen for the Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl, both exceeding their respective regular maximum sizes. The size was offered through the Matsuya App for this one day only.
Not Mentioned in the Official Notice; Past Nationwide Rollouts Were Confirmed Announcements
The wording “if it gets a good response on Meat Day, we’ll promote it nationwide around October” does not appear in the official notice about the Meat Day Campaign published on August 25; it appears only in this X post. While the official notice conveyed the price of the double-serving size and the promotion period, the official X account is discussing future plans in the form of a direct appeal to readers.
In past cases where Matsuya announced nationwide rollouts of a product — such as the nationwide introduction of the Umatoma Mazesoba in April, or the nationwide sale of Soy Milk Pudding — each was communicated as a decided fact. This time, the announcement is conditioned on a good response, framed in a way that leaves the decision up to readers’ support. The October promotion remains only an intention at this point, and whether it actually becomes a nationwide promotion will depend on a future official announcement.
The Challenge Result: “Both Finished in 20 Minutes”
The official X account later posted the results of the finish-the-bowl challenge. “Challenge results! Both of us finished in 20 minutes 👏 We’re completely full( ¯꒳¯ ),” the post reported, noting that two sisters had cleared the Bakumori-size bowls in 20 minutes. It also urged readers to try the challenge themselves before the sale ended, writing, “This is available only until 11:59 PM today, so download the Matsuya App and give it a try!”
The attached image shows two white bowls, both empty of toppings and rice, alongside the text “Both finished!” and “We did it~!”, accompanied by an illustration of Matsuya’s official mascot, Macky, celebrating.
From the advance notice the day before, to the same-day limited sale, the finish-the-bowl challenge, and finally the announcement hinting at a nationwide promotion in October “if well-received,” the string of posts unfolded across the same day. Whether the Bakumori size advances to a nationwide promotion in October now hinges on the response it received that day.
Editor's Note
Well done to the sisters who finished both bowls in 20 minutes. Whether this becomes a nationwide promotion in October depends on today's buzz.
