The Matsuya official app sent a push notification at 10 a.m. on October 13 announcing the launch of “MEGA Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl and Salt-based Green Onion Bowl.” The two items are the “Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl MEGA Serving” (1,200 yen) and the “Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl MEGA Serving” (1,140 yen). They will be on sale for one week only, from 10 a.m. on October 13 to 10 a.m. on October 20.
A One-Day Limit Stretched Into a One-Week Revival
These two MEGA Serving items are a return of the “Large Serving Boneless Short Rib and Kimchi Bowl” and the “Large Serving Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl,” which were sold for one day only on “Meat Day,” August 29 of this year. The official announcement dated October 8 states that, following the warm response to the one-day event on August 29, the sale period has been extended to one week for this revival.
Prices are unchanged by even a single yen from the one-day version. The Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl is 1,200 yen and the Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl is 1,140 yen, and the size composition (extra-large rice plus double the meat) is carried over as is.
The August 29 one-day version was limited to Matsuben Net and Matsuya Mobile Order, and could not be purchased at ticket vending machines or tablets. The text of this week-long version’s announcement contains nothing that corresponds to such an ordering-channel restriction or a ticket vending machine exclusion.
In its post on August 29 itself, the official X account (@matsuya_foods) gave a conditional heads-up about a return: “If it goes over well, we’ll promote it to a chainwide offering around October.” This nationwide sale follows through on that notice.
A Special Size Above the Regular Maximum
The price of the MEGA Serving exceeds even the largest size offered on each regular menu item. For the Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl, the MEGA Serving costs 110 yen more than the Extra-large Serving (1,090 yen). The Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl normally tops out at the Large Serving (850 yen), and the MEGA Serving costs 290 yen more than that.
| Size | Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl | Salt-based Green Onion Pork Loin Bowl |
|---|---|---|
| Small Serving | 660 yen | 600 yen |
| Regular Serving | 690 yen | 630 yen |
| Large Serving | 910 yen | 850 yen |
| Extra-large Serving | 1,090 yen | (not offered) |
| MEGA Serving | 1,200 yen | 1,140 yen |
The MEGA Serving pairs an extra-large serving of rice with double the meat, a special tier that sits outside the regular size lineup.
The Notification Text Still Says “Bakumori”
In this app notification, the title and body use different words for the item’s size. The title, “10/13 (Tue) 10:00~ [One Week Only] MEGA Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl & Salt-based Green Onion Bowl 💥,” uses the official name “MEGA,” while the body reads, “Two popular items arrive in Bakumori size 🤩🔥 Let’s go big on today’s meal 🙌‼️”, using the term “Bakumori” from the August version.
The wording of the body echoes the official X post from October 9, four days earlier: “Two popular items, the Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl & Salted Green Onion Bowl, arrive in MEGA size 🔥🔥.” It carries over the “popular items arrive in ○○” construction almost unchanged, swapping only the size word from the official X’s “MEGA size” to “Bakumori size.”
“Bakumori size” was the term the official X account used for these two items during the one-day event on August 28–29, before this one-week revival. In the October 8 announcement and in official X posts from October 7 onward, the official name is standardized as “MEGA Serving” and “MEGA size,” so the title uses the post-standardization wording while the body uses the pre-standardization wording. Note that the shortened name “Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl & Salted Green Onion Bowl,” which drops “Pork Loin,” is not the official product name in the announcement but matches the wording used by the official X account.
Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl: A Long-Lived Item That Keeps Leaving and Returning
One of the two items, the “Boneless Short Rib & Kimchi Bowl,” is a staple bowl dish that has been on Matsuya’s menu since before 2011. It is a long-lived item that has repeatedly been discontinued and revived, with multiple “revival sales” announced in the past, in 2012 and 2014. It remains on sale today and has not been discontinued.
To that staple, an idea that began as a one-day Meat Day blowout serving is now being added once again, this time as a one-week nationwide sale.
