Matsuya Delists Three Store-Limited Items, Including Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak, One Week After Launch
Three items launched as store-limited menu offerings at 10:00 a.m. on September 1 — Mala Tofu Beef Bowl / Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak, Rich Beef Curry and Rice, and Spicy Garlic Chives and Egg Rice with Choice of Egg — disappeared all at once from Matsuya’s official store-limited menu list on September 8. All three launched exactly one week earlier, on September 1, making for a short run that began on a Tuesday and ended the following Tuesday. Each of the three items was sold at 70 stores nationwide, for 210 stores in total.
70 Different Stores Each, Zero Overlap
Although the three items launched on the same day, the stores that carried them were completely separate. Mala Tofu Beef Bowl / Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak, Rich Beef Curry and Rice, and Spicy Garlic Chives and Egg Rice with Choice of Egg were each sold at 70 stores, and not a single store carried all three at once. Anyone who could get the Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak at their neighborhood Matsuya would have found that the same store carried neither the Rich Beef Curry and Rice nor the Garlic Chives and Egg Rice.
By prefecture, Tokyo had the most locations for all three items. The two mala items were spread across 28 prefectures, including 19 stores in Tokyo, 7 in Kanagawa, 6 in Osaka, 6 in Saitama, and 4 in Chiba; Rich Beef Curry and Rice covered 26 prefectures, with 18 stores in Tokyo, 7 in Kanagawa, 6 in Chiba, 6 in Saitama, and 5 in Osaka; and Spicy Garlic Chives and Egg Rice with Choice of Egg covered 25 prefectures, with 20 stores in Tokyo, 7 in Kanagawa, 7 in Osaka, 6 in Saitama, 4 in Aichi, and 4 in Chiba. Tokyo’s share among Matsuya’s roughly 1,214 operating stores is 27.8% (337 stores), which closely matches the Tokyo share for all three items (26–29%). Rather than concentrating on specific regions, the store allocation was roughly proportional to the nationwide store count.
Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak and Mala Tofu Beef Bowl
A single poster billed as “a duet of spice and numbing heat, authentic mala” featured Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak Set Meal (from 830 yen) alongside Mala Tofu Beef Bowl (with miso soup, 600 yen). The Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak was shown as a hamburg steak coated in a red mala sauce and piled high with two colors of cheese, white and yellow, served with egg, rice, and miso soup on the side. The Mala Tofu Beef Bowl was pictured as a small bowl of beef bowl topped with tofu, chopped green onion, and a red mala sauce.
Matsuya’s official X account featured the Mala Cheese Hamburg Steak in a post shortly after 8:00 p.m. on September 2, and also noted that the Mala Tofu Beef Bowl was on sale at the same time.
Rich Beef Curry and Rice
Rich Beef Curry and Rice (with rice and a specially made miso soup, 990 yen) was announced with a poster showing steaming curry against a black background, paired with a large tagline reading “One bite can’t say it all.” The copy explained, “The first bite is an elegant sweetness. Then a deep richness follows. Spice comes chasing after at the end,” and diagrammed the flavor’s progression as sweetness → richness → spice. Several large, chunky pieces of beef were visible in the bowl.
Matsuya’s official X account posted about trying the Rich Beef Curry and Rice on launch day, shortly after 8:00 p.m. on September 1.
Spicy Garlic Chives and Egg Rice with Choice of Egg
Spicy Garlic Chives and Egg Rice with Choice of Egg (780 yen) was a dish combining garlic chives with a red spicy sauce, topped with rice and egg in the center. The poster prominently highlighted the choice between Raw Egg (“Mellow and rich when mixed in”) and Soft-boiled Egg (“Silky and mellow, bringing out the flavor”). True to the tagline “Delicious whether raw or soft-boiled,” the composition showed both egg styles side by side.
Matsuya’s official X account featured this item shortly after 7:00 p.m. on September 3, noting that it would “end once supplies run out,” hinting that sales would soon be coming to a close. Sure enough, as forecast, all three items were removed from the list on September 8.
Official X Described Each Item as a “Test Sale”
None of the three items appeared in the “News” section of Matsuya’s official site; they were announced only on the store-limited page and via official X. Between September 1 and 3, official X introduced each of the three items in a separate post, and each post used the phrase “Test Sale” and mentioned that it would end once supplies ran out. This same “Test Sale” phrasing has become a recurring stock expression, having also appeared this year, since May alone, for the Yatarazuke Beef Bowl, Hiyajiru, Yulinji Set Meal, Hot Water-Seared and Soy-Marinated Tuna Bowl, and Seared Rib Finger Bowl.
A Pattern of Simultaneous Launch and Simultaneous Delisting
The practice of launching multiple store-limited items on the same day and delisting them all at once has been seen repeatedly before. In July, three items including the Hot Water-Seared and Soy-Marinated Tuna Bowl were delisted all together roughly a week after launch, and at the end of June, two items — Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal and Beef and Wood Ear Mushroom Stir-fry Beef Bowl — disappeared after about six days. This time’s roughly one-week run also falls within the range of those past six-to-eight-day cases. On the other hand, some store-limited items run for tens of days, like MATSUYA Deli, or for months, like Iburigakko Beef Bowl, so the length of a run varies widely from campaign to campaign.
Note that on the same launch date (September 1) as the three items that disappeared this time, another item, Devil Chicken, also debuted as a store-limited offering. It differs in nature, however, being available at just a single store, and was still being sold as of September 8, when the other three items were delisted.
Editor's Note
Launched on a Tuesday and pulled the following Tuesday — a tight one-week run all around. Here's hoping the Mala Tofu Beef Bowl makes its way back to us someday.
