Matsuya Official X Posts Seven Beef Bowls Likened to the Seven Colors of the Rainbow on 'Rainbow Day'

On the evening of July 16, Matsuya’s official X account published a post themed around the day being “Rainbow Day.” It reads, “Matsuya currently sells 7 kinds of beef bowls, the same number as the colors of the rainbow!” and comes with a visual of seven colorful beef bowls arranged along a rainbow arc. The post invites followers: “After working hard at the office or school, why not stop by Matsuya and take a breather?” and closes with, “We hope to add a little color to everyone’s day again today.” In the upper right of the image, Matsuya’s official mascots Macky & Yakky peek out side by side from a bowl with a rainbow arching over it.

Although the post is a play on words, the “7 kinds” is no exaggeration. It matches exactly the number of items currently listed in Matsuya’s Beef Bowl category.

The Seven Beef Bowls That Match the Rainbow’s Seven Colors

All seven bowls in the post’s image are beef bowls currently on sale. Arranged along the arc, centered on the classic Beef Bowl, are the Bowl of Mixed Simmered Beef and Kimchi topped with red kimchi and shredded nori; the Beef Bowl topped with Grated Radish & Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce, with grated radish and scallions; the Beef Bowl topped with Green Onion and Soft Boiled Egg, which layers scallions and a soft-boiled egg; the Beef Bowl topped with Cheese, with melted cheese; the Beef Bowl topped with Tomato and Cheese, with tomato sauce and cheese; and the Yatara Beef Bowl, marked “Limited-time” and topped with chopped vegetables.

Taking the plain Beef Bowl as the baseline, the flavor directions are neatly spread out: kimchi, grated radish and ponzu, green onion, cheese, tomato, and summer vegetables. The actual lineup has enough variety of color to justify the rainbow comparison.

Reaching Seven from “Six in Total”

This seven-item lineup came together only recently. In the official X post of June 21, announcing the ONE PIECE collaboration “ONE PIECE Set,” Matsuya counted its beef bowls as “six in total.” Then, on July 7, the limited-time “Yatara Beef Bowl” was added, expanding the Beef Bowl category from six items to seven.

The classic Beef Bowl, the Bowl of Mixed Simmered Beef and Kimchi, the Beef Bowl topped with Cheese, the Beef Bowl topped with Green Onion and Soft Boiled Egg, and the Beef Bowl topped with Grated Radish & Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce were joined by the Beef Bowl topped with Tomato and Cheese, which debuted in April, and then the Yatara Beef Bowl in July, completing a lineup of exactly seven colors. That Matsuya could line up seven items on “Rainbow Day” can also be read as the result of timely recent menu expansion. Note that because the Yatara Beef Bowl is sold for a limited time, the makeup of the seven will change once its run ends.

The Latest in a Run of “Anniversary Wordplay”

The official X account has recently been posting around calendar observances. After July 13’s “Nice Day” and July 14’s “Sunflower Day,” this “Rainbow Day” post is the third in just a few days.

July 16 was also a day when other official X posts piled up beyond this one. Around early afternoon, a post covered the Japanese-style dessert “Soy Milk Pudding,” and in the evening, a post tied the Beef Bowl topped with Grated Radish & Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce, one of the seven, to the ONE PIECE chopstick rest promotion. This “seven beef bowls” post takes a bird’s-eye view of the whole beef bowl lineup, including that Beef Bowl topped with Grated Radish & Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce. It made for a day when promoting a single item and promoting the color of the whole lineup ran side by side.
