On the morning of August 5, 2026, Matsuya’s official X account posted, “The New Grilled Beef Bowl will be discontinued soon!” urging anyone who hadn’t tried it yet to “eat it while you still can.” The post touched on the dish’s signature appeal, noting that “the oyster aroma really gets your appetite going,” while also hinting at what’s coming next: “A new menu item is set to replace the New Grilled Beef Bowl…?!”

A Bowl Wrapped in Oyster Aroma, Carrying On the Bloodline of the General Election’s No. 1

The New Grilled Beef Bowl pairs fragrantly grilled beef with a sweet-and-savory sauce, finished with the aroma of oyster sauce. It carries on the lineage of “Grilled Beef Bowl,” a dish Matsuya has revived multiple times over the years, and arrived on December 2, 2025 as a refreshed take on the Original Spicy-Savory Grilled Beef Bowl, which won first place in the 2018 Revival Menu General Election. It launched at 690 yen for a Regular Serving, with a Small Serving at 660 yen and a Large Serving at 910 yen also available, and the pricing and serving lineup have remained unchanged since launch.

The image accompanying the post shows the dish served in a white bowl bearing the Matsuya logo on its rim. Beef with a rich sear coats the rice, topped with a glistening soft-boiled onsen egg sprinkled with white sesame seeds, finished with a scattering of chopped green onion for color. Shredded cabbage mixed with corn sits in the back, with miso soup on the right, making for a shot that invites you to imagine breaking the egg and digging in.

The Official Site’s Notes Field Changed to “To Be Discontinued Successively” the Day Before

Ahead of this call to get one last bowl, the notes field on the New Grilled Beef Bowl’s menu detail page on Matsuya’s official site had already picked up the note “*To be discontinued successively” on the morning of the previous day, August 4. The field had previously carried no such note, and as of the morning of August 5 the same notice was still in place. As the word “successively” suggests, the dish is expected to be phased out store by store rather than all locations selling out on the same day.

This marks the end of a roughly eight-month run since the December 2, 2025 launch. Menu items carrying the “Grilled Beef Bowl” name date back to an announcement confirmed as early as 2013, and the dish has been a mainstay revived and renewed multiple times between 2018 and 2020. Even this latest incarnation, carrying on the lineage of the General Election’s No. 1 dish, is now set to take its bow, at least for now.

The post also noted at the end that the New Grilled Beef Bowl is not sold at locations co-located with Matsunoya or My Curry Shokudo.

“Discontinued Soon” Is Official X’s Go-To Way to Bid a Dish Farewell

This “XX will be discontinued soon” format, urging fans to eat it while they can, is one Matsuya’s official X account has used repeatedly when sending off a menu item. Most recently, on August 2, a post in the same tone appeared for Twice-cooked Pork, paired with a photo featuring garnishes and sides and a call to “get one last taste.” This time’s New Grilled Beef Bowl follows that same established send-off pattern.

The Successor Menu Item Gets Only a “…?!” Tease

The biggest hint of the day is the tease of a new menu item set to replace the New Grilled Beef Bowl. The post closes only with “Stay tuned 👀,” revealing neither a name nor any details. No new dish that could serve as a successor currently appears on Matsuya’s official site menu either, so its identity remains unreadable as of August 5.

On the evening of the previous day, August 4, Matsuya’s official X account had also posted “Maybe I’ll cheer it on,” hinting at an intent to support something without revealing what. Whether this tease of a successor connects to that earlier post remains to be seen in upcoming updates.

Editor's Note

Better get one more bowl in before you start missing that oyster aroma. Can't wait to see what comes next.
