Matsuya’s listing for the “Hiyajiru Vegetable Set” (730 yen), released nationwide on August 4, was switched on August 11 from the limited-time menu page to the set meal menu page on the Matsuya official website. The URL of the listing page has also changed, from one under the limited-time section to one under the set meal category.

Only one of three Hiyajiru items released together was moved

The “Hiyajiru Vegetable Set” (product code 28200) is part of the “Hiyajiru” series, which went on sale nationwide at 10:00 on August 4 along with the standalone Hiyajiru (390 yen) and others. At the time of the nationwide launch, it was listed on the limited-time menu page of the Matsuya official website.

Seven days after launch, on August 11, its listing was moved to the set meal menu category. Three items bearing the “Hiyajiru” name were added on August 4 (the Hiyajiru Vegetable Set among the set meals, the standalone Hiyajiru, and the Hiyajiru Only in the lunch menu), but only the Hiyajiru Vegetable Set has had its category changed this time. The other two remain where they were placed when they were added.

There is a precedent for a category being changed after the fact: the “Matsuya Original Sauce Roast Beef” added on July 28 was moved from “Beef Bowl” to “Bowl” about 40 minutes after it was added. That appears to have been a correction made on the day of the addition, however, and differs in nature from this category change, which came a week after launch.

Among the lowest-priced items in the set meal menu

With the move to the set meal menu, the “Hiyajiru Vegetable Set” now sits within the set meal category’s price range. The 11 items currently in the set meal category on the Matsuya official website range from 730 yen to 1,380 yen. At 730 yen, the Hiyajiru Vegetable Set is the cheapest, only 60 yen below the next cheapest, the Yakiniku Pork Loin Set Meal (790 yen).

Next come the Seared Grilled Salmon Set Meal at 800 yen, the Stir-fried Pork with Ginger Soy Sauce Set Meal at 850 yen, and the Yakiniku Boneless Short Rib Set Meal and Yakiniku Beef Set Meal at 890 yen, while the Hamburg Steak set meals occupy the top of the range at 1,180 to 1,380 yen. A dish built around summertime hiyajiru has settled into the entry-level price range of the set meal menu.

Hiyajiru comes in three price tiers by serving format

Hiyajiru is priced in tiers depending on how it is served. The standalone Hiyajiru, which comes with neither rice nor salad, is 390 yen. The “Choice of Side” option, treated as a side dish added to a main item on the lunch menu, is 270 yen. The set meal version, the Hiyajiru Vegetable Set, which comes with rice and salad, is the most expensive at 730 yen. The set meal version costs more because rice and salad come with it, a straightforward price difference.

A summer menu item that went through a May test sale

Hiyajiru was test-sold at some stores in May and went on sale nationwide on August 4, about three months later. Alongside the nationwide launch, a set promotion also began that takes up to 70 yen off the main dish when combined with Beef Bowls, Bowls, and Set Meals. Introduced as a summer dish that lets customers enjoy the savory depth of dashi served chilled, the item has, one week after launch, been moved into the regular lineup of set meals on the official website.
