Matsuya Okinawa Hiyane Store's Opening Moves from "Early October" to October 2 at 10 a.m.

The opening of Matsuya’s new store, “Matsuya Okinawa Hiyane Store (2311),” has been set for October 2 at 10 a.m. As of September 15, Matsuya’s store information page updated the note attached to the store name from “*Opening early October” to “*Opening October 2 at 10 a.m.,” giving a specific date and time to an opening period that had, until just before, been described only as “early [month].” The store will have a Matsunoya outlet attached.

That said, this store’s opening schedule has been rewritten many times already. The pattern of a specific date appearing and then reverting to an “early [month]” notation has repeated itself, so it is reasonable to treat this latest “October 2 at 10 a.m.” as the plan as of now rather than a final confirmation.

The Back-and-Forth Between “September 18” and “Early October”

The Okinawa Hiyane Store first appeared in Matsuya’s store information on August 27, when it was initially listed as “Opening planned for September 18.” The note has since changed as follows:

Date Note attached to store name
August 27 Opening planned for September 18
September 8 Opening early October
September 9 Opening September 18 at 10 a.m.
September 10 Opening early October
September 15 Opening October 2 at 10 a.m.

The original September 18 date first retreated to “early October” on September 8, then returned to “September 18 at 10 a.m.” the very next day, only to be pushed back to “early October” for a third time on September 10. In other words, the opening timing remained unsettled for roughly two weeks. This latest update gives that “early October” a concrete landing point: October 2 at 10 a.m.

The 11th Store in Okinawa Prefecture, the Second in Okinawa City

Matsuya currently operates 10 stores in Okinawa Prefecture. The Okinawa Hiyane Store will become the 11th once it opens. Okinawa City already has Matsuya Okinawa Chibana Store, so the opening of the Hiyane store will bring the city to a two-store lineup (the two stores are about 5.9 km apart).

In terms of co-located brands, it also follows the prefecture’s standard pattern. Of the 10 stores currently operating, 9 have a Matsunoya attached, with only the Naha Shintoshin Store pairing with My Curry Shokudo instead. Since the new Hiyane store will also have a Matsunoya attached, the prefecture will remain almost uniformly Matsunoya-paired even after it opens.

Nearby Matsuya locations include the Uruma Akamichi Store in Uruma City (about 4.8 km away) and the Ginowan Store in Ginowan City (about 5.5 km away), though both are in different municipalities. This can be seen as part of a broader trend of Matsuya stores spreading across central Okinawa Island.

Among New Stores Nationwide, October 2 Is on the Earlier Side

As of September 15, nine Matsuya new stores nationwide have a specific opening date set. In order of earliest opening, they are: Kagoshima Tenmonkan Store (September 17), Kami-Shakujii Store (September 18), Sayama-dai Store (September 30), and Matsusaka Kamatacho Store and Shimonoseki Chofu Store (October 1), with the Okinawa Hiyane Store’s October 2 ranking sixth. After that come Takamatsu Hyogomachi Store and Sendagi Store (October 5), and Minami-Rinkan Store (October 6). The Okinawa Hiyane Store joins this string of new store openings taking place across the country heading into autumn.

Editor's Note

After all the back-and-forth over the opening date, let's hope October 2 is the one that finally sticks this time. You'll be able to enjoy Matsunoya right alongside it, too.
