To mark “Tofu Day” on October 2, Matsuya’s official X account posted a tofu-themed message on the morning of the same day. The post introduced the fact that “Matsuya’s tofu is made with domestic soybeans,” and went on to recommend the limited-time menu item “Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal” (890 yen), which had just gone on nationwide sale on September 29.

The ‘Domestic Soybean’ Detail Wasn’t in the Launch Announcement

The post opens with “Today, October 2, is ‘Tofu Day’ ( ¯꒳¯ ),” followed by “Matsuya’s tofu is made with domestic soybeans✨” and “Why not enjoy some tofu at Matsuya today?” It then names the dish directly, adding, “If you want to really enjoy tofu, we also recommend the ‘Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal,’ now on sale🔥,” closing with “Be sure to enjoy it along with its sharp, spicy kick!”

Of these details, the claim about tofu being “made with domestic soybeans” did not appear in the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal’s launch announcement published on September 24, suggesting it was newly written for this post rather than quoted from the earlier announcement. The launch announcement’s text focused mainly on flavor, describing “rich umami and a sharp spiciness hidden within the blackness,” and made no mention of the tofu’s ingredients. The commemorative post, by contrast, highlights the care put into the tofu itself.

The opening emoticon ( ¯꒳¯ ) and the use of exclamation points follow a style Matsuya’s official X account has repeatedly used for “Day of ~” commemorative posts. The same emoticon has appeared in past commemorative posts as well, so there is no notable change in the writing style itself.

Three Days After Nationwide Launch, Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal Tied to the Commemorative Day

The image accompanying the post features the numerals “10 2” and the words “Tofu Day” set large against a light-blue background. On the left stands Matsuya’s official mascot, Macky, dressed in a station attendant-style cap and uniform, holding a plate of diced tofu. In the upper right is the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal, served in a white bowl bearing Matsuya’s mountain-shaped logo; at the bottom center is a bowl of miso soup containing tofu, pork, and vegetables; and at the bottom right is a chilled tofu-style dish topped with scallion and other garnishes — together showing several tofu-based dishes. True to its name, the Black Mapo Tofu dish features a dark mapo sauce coating diced tofu and ground meat, finished with a scattering of scallion.

The Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal named in the post first appeared on June 30, 2026, in a store-limited early release at 70 locations nationwide (it was removed from the store-limited page on July 6). About three months later, its nationwide launch was announced on September 24, and it went on nationwide sale at 10:00 a.m. on September 29. It is priced at 890 yen and offered as a limited-time item. The Tofu Day post came just three days after that nationwide launch.

As a tofu dish, Matsuya also offers the standing menu item “Miso Soup with Tofu Only” (140 yen). Rather than featuring this permanent tofu menu item, the commemorative-day post instead puts the spotlight on the newly launched limited-time product.

A Matsuya Point Lottery Campaign Marking the Launch Is Also Underway

Surrounding the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal, a follow-and-repost campaign offering a chance to win Matsuya Points by lottery is also underway to mark the nationwide launch, with an entry deadline of October 5. From the announcement the day before launch, to the launch-commemoration campaign, to posts reporting on tasting the dish, a string of related posts has followed in the run-up to and aftermath of the launch — and the Tofu Day post can be seen as an extension of that same run.

Matsuya has rolled out mapo tofu dishes before. Looking back through its announcement records, items such as the “Sichuan-style Spicy-Savory Mapo Tofu Set Meal” in 2015, the “Sichuan-style Mapo Tofu Set Meal Served with Egg” in 2019, and the “Authentic Sichuan-style Mapo Tofu” in 2025 have all been announced, with this latest “Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal” joining that lineage.

Editor's Note

Leaning into Tofu Day with a dark, spicy mapo dish is such a Matsuya move. And slipping in that bit of trivia about domestic soybeans along the way? Nicely played.
