Matsuya to Add Two Store-Limited Items Including 'Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal' at 10:00 AM on June 30
Matsuya’s store-limited lineup has seen a change. Starting at 10:00 AM on June 30, the store-limited slot will add the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal (890 yen) and Stir-fried Beef and Wood Ear Mushroom with Vegetables (960 yen). In their place, the Beef Steak Bowl A (1,280 yen) and B (1,380 yen), which had only just launched on June 23, were discontinued after about a week.
Two Items Launching June 30
| Menu | Price | Number of Stores | Eligible Stores |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal | 890 yen | 70 stores | Eligible Stores |
| Stir-fried Beef and Wood Ear Mushroom with Vegetables / Egg and Wood Ear Mushroom Stir-fry Beef Bowl | 960 yen / 630 yen | 70 stores | Eligible Stores |
Both items launch at 10:00 AM on June 30. The Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal will be available at 70 stores across 18 prefectures, while the Stir-fried Beef and Wood Ear Mushroom with Vegetables will be available at 70 stores across 28 prefectures — both nationwide rollouts. Though the store count is the same at 70, the wood ear mushroom dish is spread more thinly across a larger number of prefectures.
Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal (890 yen)
True to its name, this is a mapo tofu with an especially dark color. The announcement pushes the richness front and center, describing “the depth of douchi, tianmianjiang, and mala sauce” and declaring “this darkness is proof of the richness.” The mapo tofu is served in a white bowl topped with finely chopped scallion, and comes as a set meal with rice, pickles, and miso soup. Note that miso soup is not included for takeout orders.
Stir-fried Beef and Wood Ear Mushroom with Vegetables (960 yen)
This stir-fry combines beef and wood ear mushroom with cabbage, carrot, green pepper, and onion, finished with a sprinkle of white sesame seeds. It comes with rice and miso soup, along with mustard on the side for a change of flavor. The same slot also sees the simultaneous release of the Egg and Wood Ear Mushroom Stir-fry Beef Bowl (630 yen). The announcement uses the tagline “In the end, this is what’s delicious,” touting beef “carefully selected from the top two grades,” including U.S.-sourced beef graded USDA CHOICE, to emphasize tenderness and rich flavor.

Beef Steak Bowl A and B Discontinued After About a Week
In place of this addition, the Beef Steak Bowl A (1,280 yen) and B (1,380 yen) have been discontinued. Both items had only just launched at 32 stores on June 23, and the following day, June 24, Matsuya’s official X account posted a taste-test featuring the rare blade meat cut used in the dish. The discontinuation comes after a strikingly short run of roughly one week since launch. The store-limited slot also saw a simultaneous swap on May 11, adding one item while discontinuing two, but past cases include the New Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables, which ran for about 28 days, and the Stir-fried Beef and Okra with Oyster Sauce Set Meal, which ran for about 7 days — placing this Beef Steak Bowl among the shorter-lived listings.
Store-limited menu items that are discontinued sometimes reappear after a gap or become part of the regular lineup, so falling out of the current listings does not determine how the item will be handled going forward.
Editor's Note
The Beef Steak Bowl cleared the shelf just a week after release, and in its place comes a mapo tofu dish so dark it's practically black. Keeping up with the turnover speed of the store-limited lineup is a challenge in itself.
