Matsuya Official X Likens a Fried Egg to the Moon on Autumn Equinox Day, Promoting Its "Egg Menu"
Matsuya’s official X account (@matsuya_foods) published a post at 6:00 PM on September 23, tied to Autumn Equinox Day. It likens a fried egg floating in the night sky to the moon, with the lines “When you look at the moon… it starts to look like an egg, doesn’t it?” and “Matsuya has lots of egg menu items!”, linking moon-viewing mood with egg dishes.
A Fried Egg in the Night Sky, and Macky & Yakky Holding Up a Plate
The attached image is set against a navy night sky scattered with stars, with a fried egg, its white forming a border, placed in the upper left as the moon. In the foreground, Macky and Yakky hoist a large white plate high between the two of them, so that it appears to be offered up toward the “moon” in the sky. Golden pampas grass sways at their feet, red spider lilies, a flower of the autumn equinox season, sit at the lower left, and a green meadow and the white lettering “Autumn Equinox Day” fill the bottom. Pairing the plate, which evokes a moon-viewing offering, with the fried egg standing in for the moon, the image blends eggs with moon viewing.
23 Current Menu Items Back Up the Claim of “Lots of Egg Menu Items”
The post’s line “Matsuya has lots of egg menu items!” does not appear to be quoted directly from the official website, and looks like copy written fresh for the post. The claim itself, however, holds up against the current menu. Items whose names include “玉子,” “たまご,” “エッグ,” or “卵” (all meaning egg) number 23 on the current menu.
They span a wide range, from egg toppings to set meals, bowls, and morning sets. They include the standalone toppings “Raw Egg” and “Soft-boiled Egg,” as well as “Raw Egg (Choice of Side)” and “Soft-boiled Egg (Choice of Side)” to pair with items such as beef bowls; the raw egg and soft-boiled egg sets for each of “Pickled Vegetables,” “Grated Domestic Yam Paste,” “Kimchi,” “Fresh Vegetable Salad,” “Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables,” and “Simmered Beef & Onion cooked with Sweet Soy sauce, served in Small Dish,” mainly for mornings; set meals such as “Sausage and Egg Set Meal,” “Large Serving Sausage and Egg Set Meal,” and “Hamburg Steak with Brown Sauce and Sunny-side Up Set Meal”; and rice dishes such as “Egg on Rice with Choice of Large Serving.” From a single topping to a full meal, there are options for working egg in across every category.
A Seasonal Pitch Linking Moon Viewing and Eggs
This is not the first time Matsuya has connected eggs with moon viewing. An official announcement dated September 12, 2024, was titled “Fried Egg of Happiness for Moon Viewing: ‘Teriyaki Egg Hamburg Steak Set Meal’ Now on Sale,” and its text also included the line “for the autumn appetite and the moon-viewing season.” Likening a fried egg (egg) to the moon has been used repeatedly as a classic autumn motif.
The official X account has kept up the egg theme recently as well. On September 5, it invited readers to share their favorite combinations with “The combination I think deserves a People’s Honor Award at Matsuya is a beef bowl and a raw egg,” and on September 11, Protein Day, it promoted “Matsuya menu items made with meat and eggs” as a group, without naming a specific product. Today’s post, “Matsuya has lots of egg menu items,” fits the same pattern of pushing egg menu items in general without naming individual products.
The opening also follows recent posts. Two days earlier, on September 21, there was a holiday post beginning “September 21 is ‘Respect for the Aged Day’ ( ¯꒳¯ ),” and today’s “Today, September 23, is ‘Autumn Equinox Day’ ( ¯꒳¯ )” echoes the same emoticon and the same sentence structure.
This moon-viewing season also has the app-exclusive “Tsukimi DE Trio Campaign” underway, running from 10:00 AM on September 17 through 11:59 PM on September 30. Ordering any of the five eligible egg-topped beef bowl bento items through Matsuben Net or Mobile Order earns Matsuya Points, and the points awarded increase on September 25, the day of the Harvest Moon. This post, however, makes no mention of the campaign, and conveys the moon-viewing season through the “egg menu” angle alone.
Editor's Note
The plate is all set, but the moon turns out to be a fried egg. Just looking at this one makes you a little hungry.
