Matsuya will launch the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal at stores nationwide, except some locations, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The launch was announced in a notice on the official website on Thursday, September 24. The set meal is priced at 890 yen (tax included), and the dish is billed as “authentic Chinese,” blending three kinds of sauces and pastes: douchi (fermented black beans), tianmianjiang (sweet bean sauce) and malajiang (mala sauce).

A black mapo sauce blended from three pastes

According to the notice, douchi and tianmianjiang bring out the umami, while malajiang spreads a numbing heat and aroma. Together they make a rich black mapo sauce that coats smooth tofu and meat. The “black” in the name appears to come from the dark color produced by blending these three pastes.

In the product photos, the mapo tofu is served in a white bowl topped with chopped scallions, and every configuration carries the label “comes with a small sansho pepper packet.” The packet of sansho pepper can be sprinkled on afterward, letting diners adjust the level of numbing themselves.

Three tiers: 890, 790 and 690 yen

Three price points will be available. The product names and prices listed in the notice are as follows.

The product photos show two items side by side: the set meal and the 790-yen “Black Mapo Tofu.” The 890-yen “Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal” comes with rice and miso soup plus a salad, while the 790-yen “Black Mapo Tofu” comes with rice and miso soup but no salad. The 690-yen “Black Mapo Tofu Only” is, as the name says, the mapo on its own, with no rice or salad.

At 890 yen, the set meal is in the same price range as the Yakiniku Beef Set Meal and the Yakiniku Boneless Short Rib Set Meal among Matsuya’s current set meals. The 690-yen Only option is likewise priced the same as the Only versions of those two items, placing the new Chinese menu item on par with the established yakiniku-style set meals.

From a 70-store limited run at the end of June to nationwide

This is not the first appearance of the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal. It was sold ahead of the nationwide launch as a store-limited menu item at 70 stores from 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The price then was also 890 yen for the set meal, the same as this nationwide launch. That store-limited listing disappeared from the store-limited list on Matsuya’s official website on Monday, July 6, and after a gap of about three months, it has now been listed again as a nationwide menu item.

Matsuya’s most recent “authentic Chinese” menu item was the Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal, which went on sale on Thursday, July 9 in 2026 and was discontinued on Tuesday, August 11. That Twice-cooked Pork Set Meal was priced at 880 yen, so the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal (890 yen) costs 10 yen more. While the Twice-cooked Pork has repeatedly appeared in summer, the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal is being introduced at the end of September.

Launch date, participating stores, and the official app’s 50-yen-off coupon

Sales start at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Matsuya stores nationwide except some locations. It is sold under the “Matsuya” brand, which serves Beef Bowls, Curry and Rice, set meals and other bowls. Takeout is available, but takeout orders do not come with miso soup. Shareholder benefit vouchers can also be used, according to the notice.

In addition, the official Matsuya Foods app will distribute a 50-yen-off coupon for the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal. The image in the announcement lists the distribution period as “from 10:00 on 9/29 (Tue) to 10:00 on 10/6 (Tue).”
