On October 14 at 9:15 p.m., Matsuya’s official X account (@matsuya_foods) posted introducing the store-limited “Buffalo Chicken Set Meal” as its “second Test Sale item!” The post suggests a way of eating it where the fiery heat is wrapped in Sour Cream & Onion, and pairing it with a Cola brings on a “New York” feeling. It followed the “first Test Sale item!”—the Loco Moco Bowl—posted at 9:08 p.m. the same day, making it the second release of the night.

The Pitch: “New York, Brought to You by Cola”

The post text opens with “Test Sale item number two!” and adds the product name, “Buffalo Chicken Set Meal 🍗( ¯꒳¯ ),” with a chicken emoji and the account’s familiar emoticon. It then explains the flavor composition: “The fiery heat gets mellowed out by Sour Cream & Onion ✨,” before going on to suggest pairing it with a drink: “And if you order a Cola with it too… this is basically New York!? 🗽🇺🇸” “Please do try enjoying this combination 😊”

The accompanying photo shows a plate of fried chicken generously coated in a deep red sauce. Flecks of black pepper are scattered across it, hinting at the post’s “fiery heat.” At the back of the plate is a side dish holding a white, creamy sauce—this is the Sour Cream & Onion that “mellows it out.” In front is a salad of Shredded Cabbage and Corn, and, just as the post recommends, a can and glass of Cola appear in the background.

Five emoji are used—🍗✨🗽🇺🇸😊—along with the emoticon “( ¯꒳¯ ).” Placing the Statue of Liberty (🗽) alongside the American flag (🇺🇸) reinforces the “New York” mood, built on the fiery buffalo sauce’s American origins paired with Cola.

Two Items, One Night: A Relay of Overseas Moods

On this day, the official X account posted the Loco Moco Bowl at 9:08 p.m. as its “first Test Sale item!”, pitching a Hawaiian mood, then followed up just six minutes later at 9:15 p.m. with the Buffalo Chicken Set Meal as its “second Test Sale item!” From the first item’s Hawaii to the second item’s New York, the wording itself reads like a relay of overseas moods. A store locator link guiding readers to where both items are sold was also posted in between, at 9:09 p.m.

The Buffalo Chicken Set Meal is a store-limited menu item sold since October 13 at 70 stores across 26 prefectures nationwide, priced at 1,030 yen. The details of its release have already been covered in a separate article. Matsuya regularly rolls out store-limited menu items under this “Test Sale” label, and past items have typically ended their store-limited listing after roughly two weeks.

The flavor combination of “Buffalo Chicken” and “Sour Cream & Onion” has not previously appeared in Matsuya’s announcement text or menu descriptions, making it a flavor introduced for the first time with this Test Sale. Matsuya is presenting this way of eating—pairing spiciness with tanginess and mellowness, then layering on Cola—as a store-limited “Test Sale.”

Editor's Note

If adding just one Cola can take you to New York, that might be quite a bargain for the airfare.
