title: “Matsuya’s ‘Neo Kashmir Karegyu’ and One Other Karegyu Item Drop 12 kcal at Unchanged Prices” categories:

The nutrition information for Matsuya’s curry menu item “Neo Kashmir Karegyu” (950 yen including tax) was updated on October 13, with energy per serving falling 12 kcal from 945 kcal to 933 kcal. That same day at 3 PM, Matsuya raised the price of every beef bowl item by a uniform 20 yen, including the Regular Serving Beef Bowl, which went from 460 yen to 480 yen. Karegyu was left out of the increase, however, and its price stayed at 950 yen while only the nutrition figures were rewritten. The item went on sale on October 6, so this update comes seven days after launch.

Four nutrition values moved; only salt equivalent stayed put

The nutrition values before and after the update are as follows.

Item Before After Change
Energy 945kcal 933kcal −12kcal
Protein 20.1g 21.6g +1.5g
Fat 42.9g 41.6g −1.3g
Carbohydrates 115.1g 115.6g +0.5g
Salt equivalent 7.20g 7.20g No change

Energy and fat both fell, while protein and carbohydrates rose. Only the salt equivalent, at 7.20g, is unchanged. The figure of 945kcal was what was listed at launch on October 6, and this update is a revision from that value.

A shared shift across the “Karegyu” items that pair curry with beef bowl

On the same day, October 13, the nutrition values for the standalone Beef Bowl were also updated in the same direction. The Regular Serving Beef Bowl’s energy fell from 687kcal to 670kcal, and its protein rose from 17.1g to 18.8g. Neo Kashmir Karegyu is a dish that pairs curry with a beef bowl, so the review of the beef bowl’s figures appears to have carried straight through.

“Founding Beef Karegyu” (950 yen), the other Karegyu that pairs curry with a beef bowl, also moved on the same day, with energy going from 1,003kcal to 991kcal. Its changes match Neo Kashmir Karegyu exactly: 12 kcal less energy, 1.5g more protein, 1.3g less fat, and 0.5g more carbohydrates. Its price likewise stayed at 950 yen. On the other hand, the standalone “Neo Kashmir Curry and Rice” (680 yen), which has no beef bowl, was not part of this update, and its nutrition values are unchanged.

The 950 yen Karegyu price range

Neo Kashmir Karegyu’s 950 yen is 270 yen more than the standalone Neo Kashmir Curry and Rice (680 yen), the difference for adding a beef bowl. In the 950 yen range of the curry category, it sits alongside Founding Beef Karegyu, while above it are the Neo Kashmir Chunky Chicken Curry and Rice (1,050 yen) and the Neo Kashmir Loin Cutlet Curry and Rice (1,070 yen). Even with the October 13 price increase, the 950 yen price of the two Karegyu items did not move.

Addendum: ‘Founding Beef Karegyu’ also drops by the same 12 kcal

“Founding Beef Karegyu” (950 yen including tax), the other Karegyu that pairs curry with a beef bowl, also had its nutrition information updated on the same day, October 13. Its price remains unchanged at 950 yen.

Item Before After Change
Energy 1,003kcal 991kcal −12kcal
Protein 25.6g 27.1g +1.5g
Fat 49.9g 48.6g −1.3g
Carbohydrates 106.3g 106.8g +0.5g
Salt equivalent 5.70g 5.70g No change

The changes in energy, protein, fat, and carbohydrates all match those of Neo Kashmir Karegyu exactly. The review of the beef bowl portion common to both items appears to have carried straight through.

Editor's Note

Sidestepping the wave of price hikes, the Karegyu items kept their prices and quietly got 12 kcal lighter.
