Matsuya's Store-Limited '4-Cheese Beef Bowl' Discontinued Just 6 Days After Launch

Matsuya’s store-limited, limited-quantity ‘4-Cheese Beef Bowl’ (690 yen, with miso soup) was removed from the store-limited page on Matsuya’s official website on the morning of October 12. It went on sale at 10:00 a.m. on October 6, so it was available in stores for just over six days. The brief sales period matched what the official X account had announced the day after launch: “It will be discontinued within a week.”

The Official X Account Said “Within a Week” the Day After Launch

In its October 7 post, the official X account introduced the item with “The store-limited, limited-quantity ‘4-Cheese Beef Bowl’ is now on sale!!” It then stated clearly: “It’s a cheese beef bowl topped with cottage cheese, and you can only have it right now. It will be discontinued within a week. It’s only for now! (╹◡╹)” The removal on October 12 falls right within that “within a week” window.

An eating report post followed on October 8, introducing it with “I tried the ‘4-Cheese Beef Bowl,’ which you can only have right now” and “Cottage cheese ON the cheese beef bowl!” It closed with “I could get hooked on this… and yet I can’t eat it anymore 😢” The person who ate it added a line lamenting its end, and a few days later it really did disappear.

A 690 Yen Bowl Layered with Cottage Cheese

The product image shows a large shot of a beef bowl topped with crumbled white cottage cheese, parsley, onion, and chopped garnishes. A speech bubble reads “Regular Cheese Beef Bowl plus cottage cheese!”, and the lower right of the image notes “Extra Cottage Cheese 80 yen.” A note at the edge states, “*Natural cheese is used.”

At the top of the image, large red text reads “Get it while you can!”, and beneath it in small print, “*Next time you come, it may not be here…” A red “Limited Quantity” mark sits beside the price. The design plays up its store-limited, limited-quantity status, and the appeal clearly anticipated a short sales run.

Cheese Beef Bowls Keep Coming Back

Cheese-topped beef bowls have appeared at Matsuya time and again. In 2018, the store-limited “Spicy-Savory Cheese Potato Beef Bowl” was released; in May 2022, the “Beef Bowl topped with Kimchi and Cheese” and the “Beef Bowl topped with Cheese”; in September of that year, the “Cheese Bolognese Combo Beef Bowl”; and in April 2026, the “Beef Bowl topped with Tomato and Cheese.” The Beef Bowl topped with Cheese is also a well-loved regular item, and this ‘4-Cheese Beef Bowl’ was a limited-quantity version that layered cottage cheese on top of the regular cheese beef bowl.

The “4-kind” naming was also used in the 2017 “Choose-from-Four-Kinds Cheese Hamburg Steak Set Meal,” so it has been carried over to a beef bowl after about nine years.

A sales period of about six days is on the short side for a store-limited beef bowl. Still, there is precedent for a similarly short run: the “Yatarazuke Beef Bowl” also disappeared after about six days. Among store-limited items, the “Matsuya Original Sauce Roast Beef” was sold for 42 days in September, so this one was far shorter by comparison.

Stores Handling It Were Concentrated in the Tokyo Area

The official website listed 568 participating stores. Going through the list of handling stores on the store-limited page, Tokyo had the most with 194 stores, followed by Kanagawa Prefecture with 59, Osaka Prefecture with 58, Saitama Prefecture with 32, and Chiba Prefecture with 30. These top five prefectures alone accounted for most of the handling stores. On the other hand, 18 prefectures, including Okinawa, Yamaguchi, Gifu, Mie, and Toyama, had no handling stores at all, making for a rollout skewed toward the Tokyo area and the Kansai region. The handling rate was higher in urban areas: in Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Osaka, more than half of the active stores carried it, whereas Hokkaido and Shizuoka had only one store each.

The Next Store-Limited Menu Items Take Its Place

As the ‘4-Cheese Beef Bowl’ vanished, new items going on sale at 10:00 a.m. on October 13 were added to the store-limited page: “Spicy-Savory Stir-fried Octopus,” “Buffalo Chicken Set Meal,” and “Loco Moco Bowl,” available at roughly 35 to 70 stores. The next store-limited menu items took their place almost at the same time the Cheese Beef Bowl was discontinued.

Editor's Note

Who would have thought the "Next time you come, it may not be here" warning would prove true this quickly? Those who even went for the extra cottage cheese must feel a bit of regret.
