Matsuya Revises "Green Onion & Egg" Nutrition Facts: Salt Content Drops from 1.8g to 1.4g
Matsuya’s side dish “Green Onion & Egg” (200 yen) has had its nutrition facts label rewritten. While salt content dropped from 1.8g to 1.4g, calories, protein, and carbohydrates all increased slightly. The price remains unchanged at 200 yen.
Breakdown of the Changed Nutrition Facts
Four items were changed. The biggest shift was in salt content, which dropped 0.4g to 1.4g.
| Item | Before | After | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy | 132kcal | 134kcal | +2kcal |
| Protein | 7.5g | 7.6g | +0.1g |
| Carbohydrates | 8.6g | 8.9g | +0.3g |
| Salt Content | 1.8g | 1.4g | -0.4g |
Fat remains unchanged at 7.3g. The three items that increased each rose by a very small 0.1 to 0.3g, making the drop in salt content stand out on its own.
Salt Content Revised, No Official Announcement
Green Onion & Egg is a 200 yen topping combining chopped green onion with a soft-boiled egg, intended to be added to a Beef Bowl or Set Meal. No official announcement has explained why salt content alone dropped while the other figures rose slightly — there has been no notice of a recipe or formulation change, and the reason for the revised figures has not been disclosed. It appears to reflect a recalculation of portion size or measurement method, but there is no information confirming that the ingredients themselves have changed.
Other Menu Items Also Updated Nutrition Facts on the Same Day, September 2
As of September 2 on the official website, nutrition facts labels have also been rewritten for menu items other than Green Onion & Egg. Figures were updated across all five sizes, from Small Serving to Extra-large Serving, of “Extra Green Onion Spicy-Savory Green Onion & Egg Beef Bowl,” and across all three sizes — Small Serving, Regular Serving, and Large Serving — of “Beef Bibim Bowl.” Both revisions moved in the same direction as Green Onion & Egg: salt content decreased while calories and other figures rose slightly.
For example, the Regular Serving of Extra Green Onion Spicy-Savory Green Onion & Egg Beef Bowl saw its salt content drop from 4.8g to 4.4g, and the Regular Serving of Beef Bibim Bowl dropped from 6.2g to 5.5g — both clear reductions. The 0.4g drop for Green Onion & Egg alone fits into this same series of nutrition facts revisions.
Its Place Among the 200 Yen Side Dishes
Although the nutrition facts changed, the price remains unchanged at 200 yen. Among the current side dishes, it sits in the same price bracket as Extra Cheese, Small Serving Simmered Beef & Onion, and Rice, one step above the 180 yen bracket occupied by Sausage & Egg and Soy Milk Pudding, and one step below the 240 yen bracket occupied by Potato Salad & Fresh Vegetables and Miso Soup with Pork & Vegetables Only. Paired with Simmered Beef & Onion (370 yen), “Green Onion & Egg Simmered Beef & Onion” costs 570 yen — exactly the sum of Green Onion & Egg alone (200 yen) and Simmered Beef & Onion alone (370 yen). The total cost is the same whether you order the topping by itself or together with Simmered Beef & Onion.
Editor's Note
Matsuya's nutrition facts are the kind of thing you end up tracking even when just one topping's salt content shifts by 0.4g. It's hard not to wonder which side dish will get rewritten next.
