Matsuya Iwade and Kainan Locations Switch to 24-Hour Operation

Store information on Matsuya’s official website has revealed that the operating hours of Matsuya Iwade (0710) and Matsuya Kainan (1757) have both switched from “5:00 AM to 3:00 AM the next day” to 24-hour operation. Both stores are located in Wakayama Prefecture, and alongside the switch, both have announced upcoming overnight and early-morning closures in early August.

From “5:00 AM–3:00 AM” to Round-the-Clock Service

Until now, both stores had closed for the two-hour window between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM, but under this change they will now remain open through that window as well, operating around the clock.

At the same time as the switch, however, both stores have also announced temporary, date-limited closures. Neither involves the store itself closing down — only a pause in operations during the stated hours.

• Iwade: From August 3 to August 15, closed daily between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM
• Kainan: On August 8, closed between 12:00 AM and 9:00 AM, and between 10:00 PM and 9:00 AM the next day

For the Kainan location, a short overnight closure on July 28 had previously been listed as of July, but that has since been lifted and replaced with the new closure on August 8.

24-Hour Conversions Have Been Spreading on the Official Site Since April

Since mid-April, more than 50 stores nationwide have had their listed operating hours on Matsuya’s official website switched to 24-hour operation. Iwade and Kainan are the latest two stores to join this trend. Regardless of region, a growing number of stores are gradually shifting away from schedules that close during overnight hours — such as “5:00 AM to 3:00 AM the next day” — toward a setup that stays open through the night without interruption.

A Wave of Early-August Closures Across Wakayama Prefecture

There are currently six Matsuya locations in Wakayama Prefecture. Of these, four — Iwade, Kainan, Wakayama Kano, and Kinokawa Ohashi — have announced overnight-to-early-morning closures in early August, accounting for two-thirds of the prefecture’s stores. The remaining two, Arida Interchange and Wakayama Mukai, continue to operate as usual.

These closure announcements are not appearing uniformly across the country. Nationwide, only around 40 stores have posted early-August closures on Matsuya’s official website, and they are concentrated in eight prefectures in western Japan: Aichi, Gifu, Osaka, Hyogo, Wakayama, Kyoto, Shiga, and Toyama. In Gifu Prefecture, all seven stores in the prefecture have announced closures, while not a single store in the four major Kanto prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba, nor in Fukuoka or Hokkaido, appears on the list. In every case, the closure dates cluster in early August, ahead of the Obon holiday period.

The Separate Paths of the Iwade and Kainan Locations

The Iwade location also underwent a major operational change back in June. From June 15 to June 24, the store itself closed temporarily and switched its co-located brand from My Curry Shokudo to Matsunoya. This shift to 24-hour operation marks the second major change to the store’s operating setup this year.

The Kainan location has continued operating over the past several months while interspersing short-term closures. In July, when overnight closure schedules were updated en masse across stores in the Tokai, Kinki, and Hokuriku regions, Kainan was among the stores named. Having accumulated a series of short closures, the store is now shifting all at once to full 24-hour operation.
