Matsuya Matsusaka Okuroda Ends Late-Night and Early-Morning Hours, Shortens to 8 AM - 10 PM
Changes to operating hours or operating structures have been confirmed at three Matsuya stores. The biggest change is at Matsuya Matsusaka Okuroda (1978) in Mie Prefecture, where the regular operating hours have been changed from “2 AM - 12 AM” to “8 AM - 10 PM,” eliminating late-night and early-morning operation entirely. Matsuya Kanie (1705) in Aichi Prefecture is shifting from 24-hour operation to hours that vary by day of the week, while Matsuya Akihabara (0217) in Tokyo will temporarily close from November 12 to 18.
Matsusaka Okuroda and Kanie Stores Cut Back on Late-Night and Early-Morning Hours
The operating hours at Matsuya Matsusaka Okuroda (Daikokudamachi, Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture) had been listed as “2 AM - 12 AM; 30 min before the last order,” with a notice from October 16 to 31 stating that the store would suspend operation from 10 PM to 8 AM the following morning. As of October 26, both that suspension notice and late-night/early-morning operation itself have disappeared, and the operating hours have been changed to “8 AM - 10 PM; 30 min before the last order.”
The store’s operating hours have been shortened in stages since mid-August. On August 15, the late-night hours were changed from “4 AM - 2 AM” to “2 AM - 12 AM,” and from late August, the store began suspending operation during certain hours. Entering October, the suspended period expanded to 10 PM - 8 AM, and the duration was also extended. This time, following that series of late-night and early-morning suspensions, the regular operating hours have been changed to daytime hours of 8 AM to 10 PM. Matsusaka Okuroda Store is one of eight Matsuya stores in Mie Prefecture, and Matsuya Matsusaka Kamadachou (2299) is also located in the same city of Matsusaka, meaning a quarter of all Matsuya stores in Mie Prefecture are concentrated in Matsusaka City.
Matsuya Kanie (Nishiki, Kanie Town, Ama District, Aichi Prefecture) had previously operated “24-hour operation,” with a recent notice stating that the store would suspend operation from 3 AM to 5 AM on October 18, 24, and 25. As of October 26, the operating hours have been changed to “Monday to Thursday: 24-hour operation; Friday: until 3 AM; Saturday: 5 AM - 3 AM; Sunday: from 5 AM; 30 min before the last order,” with non-24-hour windows now set for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The store had unified its previously day-by-day operating hours into 24-hour operation on August 7. This time, the hours have shifted away from that 24-hour framework toward a schedule centered on cutting back hours mainly on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The new breakdown also differs from the day-by-day hours that existed before the August unification, so this is not simply a reversion to the previous form. Kanie Store is the only Matsuya operating in Ama District, and there are no Matsuya stores in the neighboring cities of Yatomi, Tsushima, or Aisai either.
Akihabara Store to Close Temporarily for Six Days Starting November 12
A notice reading “Temporarily closing from 3 PM on November 12, reopening at 3 PM on November 18” has been added to the store name listing for Matsuya Akihabara (Kanda Matsunagacho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo). The store is set to suspend operation for about six days, from 3 PM on November 12 to 3 PM on November 18, before reopening on the 18th.
Akihabara Store is one of six Matsuya stores clustered in the Kanda-Akihabara area of Chiyoda Ward. Tokyo has a total of 338 Matsuya stores. While a string of stores have seen their late-night and early-morning hours revised, Akihabara Store’s change takes the form of closing the entire store for several days, rather than adjusting specific hours.
Editor's Note
For those in the habit of ducking into Matsuya late at night, a shift in operating hours might be a bigger deal than it sounds.
