Matsuya Lowers the "Only" Price of Three Set Meals, Including the Grilled Chicken w/ Chili Sauce Meal, by 140 Yen
The price of the “only” option — without rice or salad — was lowered in succession on October 27 for several of Matsuya’s set meals. The three affected are the Grilled Chicken w/ Chili Sauce Meal, the Stir-fried Pork with Ginger Soy Sauce Set Meal, and the Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal, each of which saw its only-item price drop by 140 yen. The price of the set meal itself (with rice and salad) remains unchanged for all three.
Only the Only-Item Price Drops by 140 Yen, Widening the Gap to 340 Yen
The three set meals whose only-item price dropped are shown below. With the set meal price unchanged and only the only-item price cut by 140 yen, the gap between the set meal and the only item widened from 200 yen to 340 yen in each case.
| Set Meal | Set Meal Price | Only (Old → New) | Price Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled Chicken w/ Chili Sauce Meal | 990 yen | 790 yen→650 yen | 200 yen→340 yen |
| Stir-fried Pork with Ginger Soy Sauce Set Meal | 850 yen | 650 yen→510 yen | 200 yen→340 yen |
| Black Mapo Tofu Set Meal | 890 yen | 690 yen→550 yen | 200 yen→340 yen |
At 990 yen, the Grilled Chicken w/ Chili Sauce Meal is the most expensive set meal at Matsuya — among the nine set meals currently on the menu, it’s the only one priced at 990 yen. Even for this top-priced set meal, the only-item price has dropped to 650 yen.
By contrast, other set meals — the Tomato Hamburg Steak Meal, the Set Meal of Grilled Boneless Short Rib, the Set Meal of Grilled Beef, the Set Meal of Hamburg Steak in Brown Sauce, and the Yakiniku Pork Loin Set Meal — still have an unchanged 200-yen gap between the set meal and the only item. The price cut is limited to these three set meals.
No official announcement explaining the reason for the price cut could be found.
Price and Nutritional Information for the Three Only Items
As of October 27, the only-item listings for the three set meals on the official site are as follows. The nutritional figures are unchanged — only the price has dropped.
| Only Item | Price | Energy | Protein | Fat | Carbohydrates | Salt Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gorochiki Chili Sauce | 650 yen | 957kcal | 48.4g | 73.1g | 17.2g | 5.1g |
| Stir-fried with Ginger Soy Sauce | 510 yen | 548kcal | 22.6g | 41.6g | 21.5g | 4.8g |
| Black Mapo Tofu | 550 yen | 505kcal | 21.9g | 33.1g | 26.2g | 6.2g |
The only item includes just the main dish, while the set meal comes with rice and salad.
The History of the “Gorochiki” Chili Sauce
Looking back through Matsuya’s official announcements, the earliest mention of a chicken-based chili sauce menu item dates to December 2014, when it was introduced as the Chicken with Chili Sauce Set Meal (only item: 630 yen). It reappeared at a similar price point in 2015 and 2016, and in March 2019 the name changed to the Chunky Chicken Chili Sauce Set Meal (only item: 650 yen). In September 2020, the Shrimp with Chili Sauce Set Meal was also added to the lineup.
This latest Grilled Chicken w/ Chili Sauce Meal, a Chinese-style chili sauce dish made with egg, was only just released on October 20, making this a price cut on the only item just one week after launch. The new only-item price of 650 yen matches the only-item price set back in 2019 when the dish was renamed the Chunky Chicken Chili Sauce Set Meal.
Editor's Note
The set meals stay the same — only the only-item price on these three quietly dropped by 140 yen. If you're the type who brings your own rice, this is a discount that quietly works in your favor.
